About the position

The Senior Underwriter for Seneca Custom Property at Crum & Forster is a pivotal role responsible for managing risk selection, pricing, retention, growth, and profitability in accordance with business objectives for both new and renewal accounts. This position requires a thorough analysis of coverage and limit requests, where the underwriter must decide on the terms to offer and price the business in alignment with company guidelines. The role demands independent judgment and initiative to support the overarching business goals while maintaining underwriting discipline and adhering to a bottom-line underwriting philosophy. The underwriter will operate within designated authority limits and will seek necessary approvals when required. Proper documentation of files is essential, ensuring a complete underwriting thought process is recorded. Additionally, the underwriter will verify claims information from prior years, assess risk quality, and ensure compliance with company guidelines, initiating appropriate loss prevention actions as needed. Building and maintaining effective business relationships with clients is crucial for attracting and retaining profitable business. The underwriter will also be responsible for placing reinsurance according to corporate guidelines, ensuring that all actions align with the company's strategic objectives. This position is open to remote work within the Mid Atlantic Region, including New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and eastern Pennsylvania, providing flexibility in work arrangements while contributing to a dynamic and inclusive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Has responsibility for risk selection / rejection, pricing, retention, growth and profitability per objective (Business & Renewals)
  • Analyzes coverage and limit requests and decides what terms to offer
  • Prices business in accordance with company guidelines
  • Uses independent judgement and initiative to support business goals
  • Maintains underwriting discipline by maintaining bottom line underwriting philosophy
  • Remain within designated authority and seek approval as needed
  • Documenting files appropriately with complete underwriting thought process
  • Verify claims information from prior years
  • Assess risk quality and compliance within company guidelines and initiate appropriate loss prevention actions
  • Develops and maintains effective business relationships with clients in order to attract and retain profitable business
  • Places reinsurance according to corporate guidelines

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of Property Underwriting Experience
  • Experience working with wholesale brokers
  • Excellent technical and marketing skills required
  • Knowledge of market and regulatory environment
  • Strong communication, negotiation and organizational skills required
  • College degree or equivalent is preferred
  • ARM and CPCU designations are a plus.
