About the position

The Senior Underwriter position is a critical role located at either the Montpelier, Vermont or Dallas, Texas campus of National Life Group. This senior-level incumbent will be responsible for handling large face amount cases, which involves a comprehensive risk assessment and evaluation of life insurance applications, renewals, or cancellations. The role requires a deep understanding of the company's underwriting policies, guidelines, and the relevant insurance laws and regulations. The Senior Underwriter will interact closely with field personnel and mentor less experienced underwriters, ensuring that all underwriting processes are executed accurately and efficiently. In this position, the Senior Underwriter will not only underwrite and evaluate large face amount cases but will also provide second reviews and signatures for less experienced underwriters. Conducting underwriting audits as needed is also a key responsibility, along with working on various underwriting-related projects assigned by management. The incumbent will be expected to maintain strong relationships within the organization and stay informed about changing practices and regulations in the underwriting field. Additionally, the Senior Underwriter will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to provide valuable input on department procedures and practices, and may also take on a mentorship role for junior underwriters, guiding them through complex underwriting scenarios.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and evaluate large face amount cases
  • Provide second review and signature for less experienced underwriters
  • Conduct underwriting audits as needed
  • Work on underwriting related projects as assigned
  • Interact with the field on calls or field visits
  • Contribute to the building and maintaining of strong relationships within the organization
  • Maintain an awareness of changing practices and regulations
  • Serve as SME to provide input on department procedures or practices
  • Mentor less experienced underwriters

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 10+ years experience in a production oriented environment
  • 3 or more years of direct life experience preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Brokerage or reinsurance experience is desired
  • Contestable claims investigation experience desired
  • Thorough knowledge of regulatory and policy differences among states in which business is transacted
  • Must be able to pass a background check
