About the position

The Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment) position at the State University of New York at Oswego is a permanent, full-time role responsible for diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on various vehicles and equipment. The role requires a combination of journey-level and semi-skilled work across multiple trades, including auto body and welding. The mechanic will also be responsible for performing preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and supervising other workers as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnoses and performs major and minor mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs on self-propelled and non-self-propelled vehicles and equipment.
  • Installs body and fender work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains gasoline, alternative fuel, and diesel engines; performs preventive maintenance and safety inspections.
  • Maintains diesel-powered equipment and components such as hydraulic systems, transmissions, and automotive electronics.
  • Operates test equipment and hand and power tools for diagnosis and repair.
  • Welds, cuts, and brazes materials using electric or oxy-acetylene welding equipment.
  • May supervise, train, and instruct subordinates.
  • Orders, receives, and inventories supplies and parts for vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment to test proper operation.

Requirements

  • Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for diagnosis and repairs OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
  • Valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle operated.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a NYS Heavy Duty, Light Duty Inspection License within six months of appointment.
  • Ability to wear a negative pressure respirator and pass a fit test.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use TMA.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical systems, including hydraulic systems and computer control systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in auto body and welding with fabrication.
  • Knowledge of hand tools and shop equipment.
  • Ability to train and supervise skilled and unskilled workers.
