About the position

The SLD Active Thermal Control System Responsible Engineer at Blue Origin is a pivotal role within the Lunar Permanence business unit, focusing on the development of spacecraft thermal control systems for lunar missions. This position involves overseeing the active thermal control system from conception through testing and integration, ensuring the successful transport of crew and cargo to the lunar surface. The engineer will collaborate with NASA and other partners, contributing to innovative solutions in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating leadership and technical expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Define and develop spacecraft thermal control systems as the responsible engineer for the active thermal control system.
  • Oversee the active thermal control system from conception through development, testing, and integration with the vehicle.
  • Collaborate with the Thermal Hardware group and Thermal Analysis group within the Lunar Thermal integrated product team.
  • Develop component specifications, test plans, and execution reports.
  • Conduct occasional thermal analysis and make/buy decisions based on subsystem specifications and mission environments.
  • Lead small teams and coordinate with various spacecraft divisions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Engineering or another technical field.
  • 8+ years of relevant Engineering experience.
  • Solid understanding of thermal and fluid fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with common spacecraft thermal hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience assembling and testing hardware (components and/or assemblies).
  • Understanding of aerospace hardware verification and validation process.
  • Familiarity with structural design fundamentals related to thermal/fluid hardware.
  • Experience with CAD software, preferably Creo.
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive professional relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • M.S. or PhD degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 12 years of relevant aerospace experience.
  • Solid understanding of pumped fluid loop hardware such as pumps, cold plates, radiators, valves, heat exchangers, etc.
  • Vendor technical management experience.
  • Familiarity with Thermal Desktop and Sinda/Fluint, including model validation and test correlation.
  • Experience working on a verification program for a complex spaceflight or aviation system.
  • Experience maturing a design from requirements definition through hardware delivery.
  • Experience with requirements and V&V tracking tools, preferably using JAMA.
  • Experience with NASA design and certifications standards for human spaceflight.
  • Experience with NASA lunar, deep space, or planetary missions.
