About the position

The Solar Installer position at Wanzek Construction Inc. involves assisting the Solar Technician in the assembly, installation, and maintenance of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on roofs or other structures. The role requires compliance with site assessments and schematics, which may include measuring, cutting, assembling, and bolting structural framing and solar modules. The installer will be responsible for promoting and adhering to all company and safety policies and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for themselves and their colleagues. In this role, the installer will utilize various hand tools and power tools to perform a range of functions necessary for the installation of photovoltaic systems. This includes laying out, assembling, and installing solar modules, panels, or support structures as specified in the project plans. The installer will also be required to lift, carry, and hold building materials, tools, and supplies, maintaining a clean work area in accordance with the company's clean-as-you-go policy. Safety is a critical aspect of this position. The installer must take personal responsibility for their own health and safety, as well as that of others, by adhering to Wanzek's Zero Injury principles. This includes reporting accidents and near misses, participating in safety discussions, and identifying and mitigating safety hazards. The installer will also be expected to engage in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities, producing quality work that meets industry standards and project specifications. Additionally, the installer will assist in the storage, planning, and layout of materials, and will be involved in inspecting field conditions to identify problems and suggest improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and comply with all Company and safety policies and procedures
  • Use appropriate hand tools and power tools to install photovoltaic (PV) systems according to codes and standards
  • Lay-out, assemble and install solar modules, panels, or support structures as specified
  • Install structural, mechanical, rack system and PV panels
  • Lift, carry and hold building materials, tools, and supplies; maintain a clean work area
  • Take reasonable care of health and safety for self and others
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor
  • Participate in pre-job work planning and safety discussions
  • Identify safety hazards and take corrective action
  • Understand and follow lockout/tag out procedures
  • Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers
  • Actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities
  • Produce quality work that meets plans, specifications, and industry standards
  • Assist in the storage, planning, and layout of materials according to specifications
  • Observe functioning of installed equipment to determine hazards and need for adjustments
  • Inspect field conditions and identify problems, taking corrective actions as needed
  • Ensure construction equipment is correctly operated and maintained if certified to do so
  • Perform all other actions necessary to accomplish the principal duties and accountabilities

Requirements

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately
  • Ability to read and understand plans and specifications
  • Basic knowledge of working in Solar Photovoltaic construction craft
  • Ability to understand and follow directions
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working as a laborer or in any construction craft as a helper
  • Developing knowledge of the assembly, installation, or maintenance of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems
