About The Position

The Special Education Intermediate School Teacher is responsible for providing tailored educational experiences to students with special needs, fostering their intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. This role involves developing and modifying curricula, collaborating with staff and parents, and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) to ensure effective learning outcomes for all students.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree from accredited college/university.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate for special education.
  • Valid certificate that matches the subject and grade level of the assignment or demonstrate competency through the states 2010 and 2011 high objective uniform State standard of evaluation for elementary and secondary special education teachers.
  • Valid ESL certification.
  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area.
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction for assigned area.
  • Training in Crisis prevention and behavior intervention strategies.
  • Training in strategies for positive behavioral supports.

Responsibilities

  • Provide students with special needs learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.
  • Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels.
  • Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to provide effective programs for all students.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Work cooperatively with general education teachers to modify regular curricula as recommended in the IEP.
  • Prepare and implement goals and objectives recommended in students ARD/IEP meeting.
  • Conduct assessment of student learning and use results to plan for instructional activities and evaluate student progress.
  • Use technology in teaching/learning process to enhance student learning and progress.
  • Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, or feeding of students as recommended in students IEP.
  • Manage behavior using positive behavioral supports.
  • Utilize crisis intervention strategies and/or physical restraint as recommended in a students IEP.
  • Provide interventions recommended by the Response to Intervention (RtI) team to general education students.
  • Share responsibility in implementation of (RtI) model which may include instructing general education teachers in special education techniques, providing small group/individualized interventions, assessing student progress weekly and maintaining data collection.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with parents.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills, present information accurately.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
