About the position

The Special Education Teacher for Autism at Kalamazoo Regional Educational Services Agency is responsible for providing tailored instruction to students with autism, ensuring that each student progresses toward their individual educational goals. This role requires the use of multisensory strategies and varied teaching techniques to meet the diverse needs of students. The teacher will plan curriculum and prepare lessons that align with the achievement levels of students, providing direct instruction and supervision in both school and community settings. In addition to instructional duties, the teacher will collaborate with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop individualized educational programs (IEPs) for students with varying learning abilities. Participation in MET, IEPT, and IFSP meetings is essential to ensure that each student's needs are met effectively. The teacher will also instruct students in essential daily living skills necessary for independent living and economic self-sufficiency, covering areas such as hygiene, safety, and food preparation. Regular observation and evaluation of student progress are critical components of this role, as is the preparation of reports to communicate findings. The teacher will meet with parents to provide support and guidance in utilizing community resources, and will administer and interpret ability and achievement tests to assess student performance. Consistent attendance and adherence to the policies and procedures outlined in the Kalamazoo RESA handbook are mandatory. The position also includes supervisory responsibilities, particularly in training and directing the work of AI paraprofessionals, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and applicable laws.

Responsibilities

  • Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional materials according to achievement levels of students
  • Provides direct instruction and supervision of students within school/community settings
  • Confers with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and others to develop individual educational programs for students
  • Attends MET, IEPT and/or IFSP meetings
  • Instructs students in academic subjects, utilizing various teaching techniques
  • Instructs students in daily living skills required for independent living and economic self-sufficiency
  • Observes, evaluates, and prepares reports on progress of students
  • Meets with parents to provide support and guidance in using community resources
  • Administers and interprets results of ability and achievement tests
  • Maintains regular and consistent attendance
  • Assists in the supervision of AI paraprofessionals, including training and directing their work

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university
  • Special education endorsement in AI
  • K-12 Michigan Certification; Autistic Impaired Endorsement
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals from a wide range of cultures
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including listening
  • Ability to problem solve and write reports
  • Ability to efficiently use computer and applicable software
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes in the work environment
  • Attitude of acceptance and esteem for students
