About the position

The Special Education Teacher at the Middle School Success Academy plays a crucial role in enhancing the educational experience of students with special needs. Under the general supervision of the Success Academy Principal, the teacher is responsible for maximizing the learning experience of these students in various areas, including academics, interpersonal skills, and daily living activities. This is achieved through the implementation of district-approved curriculum, thorough documentation of teaching and student progress, and addressing the specific needs of each student. The teacher is expected to provide a safe and optimal learning environment that fosters growth and development for all students. In this position, the teacher will conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations to identify learning issues among students. Based on these assessments, the teacher will recommend appropriate courses of action or corrective procedures to help students overcome their challenges and maximize their learning potential. Participation in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings is essential, as the teacher will assist in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique needs. The teacher will also work closely with students and teaching staff to implement these IEPs and behavior management plans effectively. Collaboration is key in this role, as the teacher will coordinate with outside agencies, organizations, and institutions, including state and federal authorities, to ensure that students receive the necessary support. Additionally, the teacher will work with administrators and other teaching staff to assess individual students' abilities and needs, particularly those with special needs, and to familiarize stakeholders with available social work services. The teacher will serve as a resource for students and parents, providing counseling that promotes personal growth, self-understanding, and effective behavioral management. This role also involves maintaining open lines of communication with parents to encourage their involvement in their children's education. The teacher will assist in orienting new teachers and provide in-service training in guidance as needed. To ensure the success of the educational program, the teacher will select and requisition appropriate educational materials and maintain accurate inventory records. The position requires state certification as a Special Education Teacher and a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant education discipline. Continuous professional development is encouraged, with opportunities to attend seminars, workshops, and professional meetings to stay updated on current developments in the educational field.
