About the position

The Special Education Teacher for Preschool at Windsor Public Schools is responsible for facilitating student success and growth in both academic and interpersonal skills. This role involves implementing the district-approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress, and addressing the specific educational needs of individual students. The teacher will create a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment while providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals. The teacher will develop and administer a preschool curriculum that aligns with the school district's goals and objectives, ensuring compliance with NAEYC accreditation standards. Participation in the evaluation of students referred to special education is also a key responsibility. The teacher will promote a classroom environment conducive to individualized and small group instruction, developing lesson plans and instructional materials that translate into effective learning experiences. Ongoing assessment of student learning will be conducted, with instructional methods modified to fit the needs of individual students, including those with special needs. In addition to instructional duties, the teacher will instruct students in responsible citizenship and other subject matters as specified by applicable laws and administrative regulations. Continuous professional development is encouraged through attendance at seminars, workshops, and professional meetings. The teacher will maintain accurate records of student activities, achievements, and attendance, while also encouraging parental involvement in the educational process. The role includes supervising students during school activities outside the classroom and administering standardized tests as required by the district.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and administer preschool curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Maintain NAEYC accreditation standards.
  • Participate in evaluation of students referred to special education.
  • Promote a safe and conducive classroom environment for individualized and small group instruction.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into effective learning experiences.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student learning and modify instructional methods to fit individual needs.
  • Instruct students in responsible citizenship and other subject matters as specified by laws and regulations.
  • Acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, and research.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record-keeping, grading, and reporting for student activities and attendance.
  • Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior for a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinate with staff to evaluate and assess curriculum, participating in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Select and requisition appropriate instructional materials and maintain inventory records.
  • Supervise students in activities outside the classroom during the school day.
  • Administer standardized tests in accordance with District testing programs.

Requirements

  • State Teaching Certification as a Preschool Special Education Teacher (112, 113 or 065).
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education or a related discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
  • Master's degree in a related area preferred.
  • Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels is a plus.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action plan formulation.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
