About the position

The Special Education Teacher for Science (grades 7-12) is a certified position within the Exceptional Education Department at BOCES Smith School. This full-time role spans 10 months and is designed for educators who are passionate about providing engaging, inquiry-based instruction in high school Earth Science, Biology, and Chemistry. The teacher will implement the New York State Next Generation Standards while working with students in the Turning Point and Springboard high school programs, which cater to students with learning, emotional, and behavioral disabilities in an 8:1:1 classroom setting. In this role, the teacher will have the autonomy to prioritize content, design curricula, and create laboratory experiences that meet the diverse learning needs of students. Responsibilities also include case management duties for homeroom and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), which involve progress monitoring and maintaining student records in compliance with State and Federal regulations. The ideal candidate will be a flexible, out-of-the-box thinker who is dedicated to collaboration with colleagues and partner agencies to foster a therapeutic classroom environment. Additional duties may be assigned as required, emphasizing the importance of adaptability and teamwork in this position.

Responsibilities

• Provide engaging and inquiry-based instruction in Earth Science, Biology, and Chemistry for high school students.
• Implement the NYS Next Generation Standards in the classroom.
• Design curricula and laboratory experiences tailored to student needs.
• Manage casework for homeroom and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
• Monitor student progress and maintain records in accordance with regulations.
• Collaborate with colleagues and partner agencies to create a therapeutic classroom environment.
• Perform additional duties as required.

Requirements

• Must be New York State Certified - Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist (SWD 7-12) OR hold Permanent NYS Special Education Certification K-12.
• Eligibility for Highly Qualified (HQ) status using the HOUSSE rubric in Biology and/or Earth Science and/or Chemistry.
• Possess a Statement of Continued Eligibility (or limited extension) in Biology and/or Earth Science and/or Chemistry.
• New York State Certified Students with Disabilities 7-12 with dual certification in 7-12 Biology or Earth Science or Chemistry.
