About the position

As a Special Education Teacher, you will plan, prepare and implement the instructional process for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) within the learning center or classroom. This includes the delivery of instruction, implementation of curriculum materials and educational software, and development of daily lesson plans and classroom schedules that reflect state and school requirements as well as the physical, emotional, and educational needs of the learner. In this role, you will provide a collaborative environment for students, parents, center staff, and administrative personnel. You will establish a climate that promotes a firm, fair, and respectful classroom environment with a focus on social development and group responsibility by modeling and reinforcing positive behaviors as outlined in the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program for the school and classroom. You will implement established school-wide and classroom PBIS programs, maintain data collection and record-keeping systems, and prepare reports on children and activities as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations. Additionally, you will provide direct instruction in subjects as required, work in a team environment to effectively teach collaboratively and/or co-teach curricular subjects as required in IEPs, and modify curriculum to assist with differentiated instruction for students. You will also act as a case manager for special education students, prepare lesson plans and materials for assigned classes, and report incidents to maintain a positive learning environment. Keeping up to date with research-based practices and developments in your subject area will be essential, as will responding constructively to feedback and performing other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and implement the instructional process for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Deliver instruction and implement curriculum materials and educational software.
  • Develop daily lesson plans and classroom schedules that reflect state and school requirements.
  • Establish a collaborative environment for students, parents, center staff, and administrative personnel.
  • Create a classroom climate that promotes social development and group responsibility.
  • Implement established school-wide and classroom PBIS programs and maintain data collection systems.
  • Record student progress and maintain student files, preparing reports as required.
  • Write IEPs, behavior plans, and functional behavior analyses as needed.
  • Provide direct instruction in subjects and work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Modify curriculum and assist with differentiated instruction for students.
  • Act as case manager for special education students, updating IEPs and goals as required.
  • Prepare lesson plans and materials for assigned classes.
  • Report incidents to maintain student safety and a positive learning environment.
  • Assist the Site Director in maintaining the physical center and supplies.
  • Stay updated with research-based practices and developments in the subject area.
  • Respond constructively to feedback and perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in education or related field.
  • Meet all state teaching license and/or certification requirements.
  • Active special education certification.
  • Prior experience with curriculum development, differentiation, and instruction in a classroom setting.
  • Prior experience working in an alternative and/or special education program setting preferred.
  • Advanced motivational, problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities and new initiatives.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Highly skilled in working with students with diverse needs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS).
  • Experience in crisis intervention.
  • Skills in personalized instruction and classroom management.
