About the position

The Specialty Tax Programs Auditor 3 is primarily responsible for completing desk audits to ensure taxpayers are in compliance with Arizona state tax laws, rules, and regulations as it relates to specialty taxes (i.e. Vehicle, Boat, and Aircraft Use Tax, Liquor Luxury Tax, and Bingo Tax). This role is also responsible for maximizing taxpayer education and accelerating the tax processing experience with the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR). The schedule would consist of working three (3) days per week in-office and two (2) days remotely. The State of Arizona strives for a work culture that affords employees flexibility, autonomy, and trust. Across our many agencies, boards, and commissions, many State employees participate in the State's Remote Work Program and are able to work remotely in their homes, in offices, and in hoteling spaces. All work, including remote work, should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is properly authorized in advance.

Responsibilities

  • Processes desk audits for vehicle, boat, and aircraft use tax.
  • Processes desk audits for Bingo and Liquor Luxury tax.
  • Provides research and analysis into state statutes, laws, rules, regulations, and court rulings.
  • Implements standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training materials.
  • Provides customer service and/or education on applicable state statutes, laws, rules, regulations, and court rulings.
  • Assists taxpayers with ensuring required payments are completed correctly.
  • Coordinates, participates in, and/or supports projects or programs specific to the Specialty Tax unit.
  • Remains current on all laws, regulations, policies, and best practices related to taxation.
  • Actively contributes to team and individual effectiveness.
  • Prepares for and actively participates in 1:1 coaching with supervisor.
  • Maximizes work processes and deliverables through lean principles.

Requirements

  • Any combination that meets the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA); typical ways KSAs are obtained may include but are not limited to: a relevant degree from an accredited college or university such as Bachelor's Degree (e.g., B.A.), training, coursework, and work experience relevant to the assignment.
  • Minimum two (2) years' related experience as an Auditor, or equivalent experience.
  • Valid Arizona Driver's License.
  • Working knowledge of state tax laws, rules, and regulations as it relates to specialty taxes.
  • Working knowledge of federal tax laws, rules, and regulations as it relates to specialty taxes.
  • Working knowledge of specialty tax programs policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS).
  • Strong verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
  • Effective organization and time management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demeanor.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in the use of a PC/laptop in a Windows environment and Google Suite applications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or closely related field.
  • Auditing experience.
  • Experience with Continuous Improvement, Six Sigma and/or LEAN.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
