About the position

The Underwriting Specialist in Contract at Nationwide's Property and Casualty team is responsible for analyzing complex risks and providing insurance solutions that align with customer needs and business goals. This role involves determining risk acceptability, pricing, coverage, and terms for assigned lines of business, while fostering relationships with general agents to drive profitability. The position requires a high level of authority and judgment, as well as the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Review individual risks with assigned agents or programs and make acceptance or declination decisions based on necessary information.
  • Analyze exposures to loss and develop adequate premium charges for the exposure, determining appropriate endorsements and exclusions.
  • Place reinsurance for accounts within department guidelines as necessary.
  • Achieve individual production and loss ratio goals through effective territory management and marketing.
  • Quote, price, and underwrite new and renewal policies and endorsements for complex accounts.
  • Monitor risk selection and pricing decisions for the entire agency plant.
  • Analyze premium and loss results by agency, state, and major class of business.
  • Handle policy maintenance items and mid-term requests, including endorsement requests and changes to policies.
  • Review loss control reports and make recommendations to agents or changes to policies.
  • Follow up on outstanding information as required and review claim activity to take appropriate action.
  • Foster positive business relationships with general agents through daily contact and conflict resolution.
  • Travel to agency offices for audits, training, or marketing visits as required.
  • Assist in the development of marketing ideas and strategies for underwriting seminars and campaigns.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree preferred, or equivalent work experience considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Completion of general insurance courses such as CPCU, CIC, AU, ARM, CPIW, CWIS, or ASLI is preferred.
  • Six years of related experience or five years as an underwriter in excess & surplus lines preferred.
  • Knowledge of underwriting policies, practices, insurance law, and marketing principles.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrated advanced negotiation skills.
  • Ability to analyze insurance risks and determine acceptability, including policy language and rating plans.
  • Ability to work with the wholesale/general agency distribution system.
