About the position

The Specialist Engineer, Stress at Virgin Galactic will be responsible for tackling some of the most challenging engineering problems throughout all phases of the program life cycle. This role is critical in supporting both vehicle design/build and flight test operations, requiring hands-on assessment and analytical substantiation of vehicles in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment. The Specialist Stress Engineers will collaborate with various disciplines, including Structures Design, Maintenance & Operations teams, Manufacturing, and Propulsion, to provide essential design substantiation, test support, and operational assistance. Senior Stress Engineers are expected to work both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating leadership and technical expertise in their tasking. In this role, the Specialist Engineer will perform structural analysis to ensure the integrity of components, assemblies, and systems. They will review, update, and create engineering analytical definitions for these components and assemblies, developing and utilizing finite element models as necessary. The Specialist Engineer will play a vital role in the workflow release process for structural design, supporting the review of manufacturing plans and procedures to ensure compliance with design and load requirements. Additionally, they will be responsible for creating structural component and system test plans to verify manufacturing and testing processes, developing standardized analysis criteria and templates, and mentoring junior team members. There may also be opportunities to lead small teams of engineers through various projects and assignments, enhancing both individual and team performance.

Responsibilities

  • Performs structural analysis to provide analytical definition and/or ensure structural integrity of components, assemblies, and systems
  • Reviews, updates, and creates engineering analytical definition of said components and assemblies (analysis documentation)
  • Develops and/or utilizes finite element models (global and discrete)
  • Plays an integral role in the workflow release process for structural design
  • Supports review of manufacturing plans and procedures to ensure compliance with design and load requirements
  • Supports the creation of structural component and system test plans which will be used to verify manufacturing and testing
  • Develops standardized analysis criteria and templates
  • Mentorship of more junior team members
  • May have responsibility for tasking and leading small teams of engineers through projects / assignments

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Proven experience in structural analysis and engineering
  • Strong knowledge of finite element analysis techniques and tools
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Experience with manufacturing processes and compliance requirements
