About the position

The Sports Program Instructor at The YMCA of Greater Monmouth County plays a vital role in supporting the organization's mission to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about sports and have a background in coaching or playing sports such as basketball and soccer. The instructor will be responsible for implementing the sports program curriculum, which focuses on skill development, good sportsmanship, and fostering a love for sports participation among youth. In this role, the instructor will create a welcoming and nurturing environment that embodies the YMCA's core values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. The instructor will lead participants through structured group programs, ensuring that all individuals are engaged and treated fairly. This includes monitoring activities, maintaining attendance records, and making necessary adjustments to encourage participation from all members. The instructor will also interact positively with participants and their parents, promoting a family-friendly atmosphere. Safety is a top priority, and the instructor will exercise sound judgment regarding member safety and injuries, adhering to all emergency procedures. Regular inspections of the work area and equipment will be conducted to identify any safety risks, and any incidents will be reported promptly. The instructor will also be responsible for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards, particularly in light of health and wellness initiatives. Participation in staff meetings and ongoing training is required to ensure the highest standards of service excellence are met. Overall, the Sports Program Instructor will represent the YMCA in a professional manner, contributing to a positive and cheerful environment while fulfilling various duties as assigned by the Regional Youth & Sports Director or Branch Executive Director.

Responsibilities

  • Must always be on time and ready for your scheduled shift, adhering to the established branch and department dress code.
  • Demonstrate YMCA core character values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring in all interactions with employees, members, staff, and others; commit to ongoing professional development.
  • Leads participants through the intended group program curriculum, maintaining the roster and attendance tracking.
  • Monitors participants' activity to ensure all are participating, being treated fairly, and provided equal opportunities; proactively make adjustments to engage those not actively participating.
  • Interacts with participants and parents in a positive manner that reflects a 'family friendly' YMCA.
  • Exercise sound judgment in relation to member safety & injuries; follow all emergency procedures.
  • Visually inspect work area and equipment for safety and risk; report any problems to the supervisor in writing.
  • Responsible for filling out accident/incident reports and getting these reports to the Regional Youth & Sports Director; report any unsafe or suspicious activity directly to the Regional Youth & Sports Director or Director on Duty.
  • Embrace and adhere to service excellence standards; provide outstanding service to customers and constituents.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with youth; complete required abuse risk management training and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.
  • Wear appropriate mask and personal protective equipment as required.
  • Assist in enhanced cleaning in areas where the employee is not directly assigned as well as normally assigned areas; all employees are expected to wipe machines, screens, computers, phones, or anything that is used after they use it, and wash their hands frequently.
  • May be assigned to areas other than their normally assigned area as needed to meet organizational needs.
  • Represent the YMCA in a professional manner and promote a positive and cheerful environment.
  • Attend and participate in all required staff meetings and continuing job training.
  • Be able to complete payroll on time each week on the ADP Mobile application on your personal phone.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties assigned by the Regional Youth & Sports Director or Branch Executive Director.
  • Find a substitute and notify the Membership Director if unable to attend an assigned shift.

Requirements

  • Minimum 17 years old, 18 years of age or older preferred.
  • High school education/GED equivalent.
  • Previous experience playing or coaching sports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with youth and adults.
  • First Aid, CPR/AED certification within 90 days of hire date.
  • Completion of the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County New Team Member Orientation.
  • Completion of YMCA Child Abuse Prevention Online Training.
  • Completion of Blood borne Pathogen Online Training.
  • Notify Wellness Director within 60 days before First Aid, CPR/AED expiration date.
