About the position

The official title of this position will be IT Consultant or IT Consultant, Sr (depending on experience). This position is for an SQL Server Database Administrator. The Database Administrator (DBA) will play a critical role in ensuring the availability, performance, and security of our enterprise database systems. It is expected that DBAs will specialize in either Oracle or SQL Server, but cross-training is welcome if desired. Working closely with other teams in a multi-vendor, multi-shore environment, the DBA must help to foster cooperation between teams to solve complex problems and continuously improve customer experience.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and maintain database software and related technologies.
• This position will require occasional after-hours support and participation in an on-call roster with both employees and contract support resources.
• Design and implement database structures, including tables, indexes, and partitions, to support optimal performance and scalability.
• Monitor and tune database performance, identifying and resolving issues proactively to ensure maximum uptime and efficiency.
• Manage vulnerabilities throughout our database fleet in accordance with established policies/procedures.
• Implement and maintain database security policies, including access controls, encryption, and data masking, to protect sensitive information from unauthorized access.
• Plan and execute database backup and recovery strategies, including regular backups, point-in-time recovery, and disaster recovery procedures, to minimize data loss and downtime.
• Collaborate with developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to troubleshoot database-related issues and optimize application performance.
• Conduct regular health checks and performance assessments of database systems, recommending and implementing improvements as needed.
• Stay abreast of emerging technologies and best practices in database administration, evaluating and implementing new tools and techniques to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
• Work seamlessly alongside a group of outsourced partners who supplement our DBA service offering to meet SLAs/OLAs.
• Maintain detailed knowledge of our operational practices.
• Provide regular input for the strategic development of corporate database operations.
• Demonstrated ability to appropriately prioritize and manage workload in a remote environment.
• Demonstrated experience managing IT projects in an outsourced development environment.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
• 5+ years of experience as a Database Administrator in a large-scale enterprise environment (8+ for Sr level position).
• Proficiency in installing, configuring, and managing database software (Oracle 11g/12c/19c+, SQL Server 2012/2016/2019+) and related tools.
• Strong understanding of database architecture, performance tuning, and optimization techniques.
• Experience with database security concepts and technologies, including role-based access controls, encryption, auditing, and threat/vulnerability management (TVM).
• Solid knowledge of database backup and recovery strategies (especially Commvault).
• Excellent troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex database issues in a timely manner.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice-to-haves

• Microsoft or Oracle certifications preferred, but not required.
• Experience operating and managing databases in a cloud environment is a strong plus (particularly AWS).
• Experience migrating databases from on-prem to cloud environments is also a strong plus.
• The following skills and technologies are considered a strong plus: ServiceNow (Incident, Request, and Configuration Management), Process automation, Continuous Improvement methodologies.
