About the position

The Sr. Biomedical Engineer position at Abbott is a pivotal role within the Abbott Diabetes Care Division, located in Alameda, CA. This position is focused on advancing the management of diabetes through innovative technologies that provide accurate data for better health decisions. The successful candidate will independently conceive, execute, and communicate novel multi-disciplinary research or development strategies that align with project and area goals. This role requires generating new scientific proposals and leading those initiatives, while also critically evaluating scientific and regulatory advancements in the field. The engineer will serve as a lead scientist on their own projects and contribute valuable scientific insights to multiple other projects, demonstrating a consistent record of accomplishment in achieving both scientific and business objectives. In this role, the engineer will plan and execute laboratory research, maintaining a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories. They will initiate, direct, and execute scientific research and development strategies, investigating the feasibility of various scientific principles and concepts for potential inventions and products. Building productive collaborations and effective communication with other groups, both within Abbott and externally, is essential. The engineer will interact with suppliers to resolve scientific and technical challenges, assume responsibility for setting and achieving team goals, and guide the formation of research and development strategies. They will also be responsible for resource allocation, ensuring teams meet milestones, and recognizing the need for additional resources, escalating to leadership as necessary. The engineer may act as a spokesperson for corporate research and development, advising top management, and may participate in the development of patent applications. They will interface with various departments, serve as an internal consultant, and participate in lab safety initiatives, potentially leading or recommending new procedures. Maintaining accurate records of research and project activities in accordance with Abbott policies and implementing the quality system's effectiveness are also key responsibilities. Additionally, the engineer may be responsible for hiring and managing up to four junior to mid-level scientists.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and executes laboratory research.

  • Independently identifies and communicates issues and opportunities.

  • Plans resource allocation and distribution.
  • Holds teams accountable for meeting milestones.
  • Recognizes the need for new or additional resources and escalates to leadership as needed.
  • Acts as spokesperson on corporate research and development and advises top management.

  • Participates in Lab Safety, and may lead or recommend new procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree with 10 years of experience in research in industrial or academic setting or Doctorate's Degree with 4 years of industry experience.
  • Familiar with standard laboratory techniques.
  • Able to present orally and in writing at a professional level.
  • Able to perform proficiently under applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Highly effective writer and oral communicator of research, technical and regulatory issues.
  • Competent in authorship of peer-reviewed scientific papers and/or patents.
  • Advanced computer skills, is proactive to learn new systems and processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related disciplines.
  • Familiar with CAD tools.
  • Experience with industrial control systems, specifying, configuring and troubleshooting controllers (particularly Aerotech) and electrical systems.
  • Experience programming PLCs and Visual Studio.NET.
  • Experience with industrial laser systems, particularly scan head-based systems, laser system bring-up and troubleshooting, beam alignment, cut job parameter development and laser safety best practices.
