About the position

The position provides advanced engineering expertise in support of highly technical and advanced manufacturing processes, which typically require specialized qualifications in chemical and materials engineering. The role involves performing technical project management and engineering design, development, evaluation, and quality assurance functions for complex engineering projects and products, particularly in the realm of national security applications. The engineer will apply mathematical, physical science, and advanced engineering technologies to meet engineering delivery objectives, exercising considerable latitude in defining technical objectives and responsibilities. This role is recognized as an authority within the area of expertise, showcasing a wide versatility of experience and capability. Key responsibilities include project planning and resource management across multiple disciplines to achieve quality, delivery, and cost objectives. The engineer will conduct research and development experiments to resolve complex engineering and quality problems using advanced scientific methods. They will be responsible for writing technical reports on experimental results, estimating production costs, monitoring performance, and preparing management reports. The role also involves establishing operating procedures for new products, defining and recommending new designs, and planning engineering testing and development programs. The engineer will utilize advanced statistical methods to address critical engineering and production problems, ensuring product manufacturability and inspectability. In addition, the engineer will lead and mentor junior engineers, evaluate and implement innovations to improve quality and productivity, and perform complex calibration and measurement services. Safety is a priority, and the engineer is expected to conduct activities in a safe manner, adhering to established health, safety, and environmental requirements. The role may also involve other duties as required, with a strong emphasis on problem-solving and innovative methodologies to resolve processing and design challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Perform project planning and manage project resources to achieve quality, delivery, and cost objectives.
  • Conduct research and development experiments to resolve complex engineering and quality problems.
  • Write technical reports on results and conclusions drawn from experiments and incorporate findings into formal specifications.
  • Estimate set-up times, flow-times, costs of production and acceptance equipment, and compile cost estimates and delivery quotations.
  • Monitor performance and prepare reports, statistics, and recommendations for management review.
  • Participate in establishing operating procedures on new products and components.
  • Define and recommend new designs, design changes, and alternate designs of instruments and test equipment.
  • Plan and perform engineering testing and development programs using advanced statistical methods.
  • Originate, refine, and release complex manufacturing or inspection work directions.
  • Determine acceptability of processes and materials in conjunction with design agency and other organizations.
  • Interact with design agency and/or supplier counterparts to resolve design, development, production, and acceptance issues.
  • Apply, develop, and recommend innovative methodologies and technologies to resolve processing, inspection, and design problems.
  • Provide technical consultation to management and lead technical project teams.
  • Lead, train, and mentor Engineer I and Engineer II on various test processes and procedures.
  • Evaluate and implement innovations that improve quality, reduce flowtime, and enhance operational surety.
  • Perform highly complex calibration and measurement services and recommend changes to improve services.
  • Conduct activities in a safe and healthy manner according to established HS&E requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program or a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from an accredited program.
  • Six or more years of relevant experience in engineering, analytical, or related technical activities.
