About the position

As a Sr. Chemical Process Engineer at Dyno Nobel, you will play a crucial role in delivering capital projects within a diverse, multidisciplinary team of engineers, project managers, and stakeholders across various business units. Your primary responsibilities will encompass both process engineering and project engineering, specifically supporting explosives manufacturing projects in the United States, Canada, and Central and South America. You will collaborate with the Process Engineering team to create essential project deliverables, including Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), material and energy balances, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), equipment and pipe sizing calculations, and detailed equipment specifications. Your expertise will be vital in producing process design calculations related to heat transfer and fluid flow, ensuring compliance with internal and external policies, standards, and industry trends to uphold our Zero Harm strategy regarding engineering design, process safety, personnel safety, and environmental impacts. In addition to your engineering responsibilities, you will provide on-site engineering support to existing facilities across the Americas that require upgrades or modifications. You will be tasked with defining and resolving plant process problems to prevent business interruptions, initiating and supporting management of change (MoC), and identifying, evaluating, and executing process and safety-related improvement projects. Your understanding of emulsion and emulsifier technology will be essential in making design decisions that affect product quality. Furthermore, you will mentor and assist in the technical development of other engineers, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment. As a project engineer, you will lead engineering efforts on projects throughout the Dyno Nobel commercial business. This includes facilitating meetings with business unit stakeholders to develop business cases, project scopes, and detailed design requirements. You will supervise the project delivery team's completion of all engineering deliverables in accordance with the approved scope, ensuring that the full design and drawing package is executed on schedule and within budget. Your leadership will be instrumental in promoting a culture of safety, ensuring that safety processes such as SAO, JSA, and Take 5's are properly utilized, and embodying the IPL Corporate Values.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Process Engineering team to create project deliverables including PFDs and material/energy balances, P&IDs, equipment & pipe sizing calculations, equipment and instrumentation lists & data sheets, process descriptions, safe operating envelope, control philosophy, and cause & effect.
  • Produce sizing calculations and specifications for equipment including pumps, heat exchangers, boilers, etc.
  • Produce process design calculations related to heat transfer and fluid flow.
  • Provide technical support throughout project construction.
  • Conduct performance testing and provide commissioning support.
  • Stay well briefed and ensure compliance with internal and external policies, standards, and industry trends to support our Zero Harm strategy related to engineering design, process safety, personnel safety, and environmental impacts.
  • Provide on-site engineering support to existing facilities across the Americas that require upgrades or changes.
  • Define and resolve plant process problems to prevent business interruption.
  • Initiate and support management of change (MoC).
  • Identify, evaluate, and execute process and safety related improvement projects.
  • Understand emulsion and emulsifier technology and how design decisions affect product quality.
  • Mentor and assist in technical development of other engineers.

  • Be a leader in the pursuit of achieving Zero Harm by influencing behavioral based safety.

Requirements

  • 6 years demonstrated process engineering success in an industrial project environment designing and troubleshooting chemical processes.
  • Project engineering/management experience preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of process engineering calculations and equipment including pumps, valves, heat exchangers, process vessels, boilers, and other process equipment and supporting infrastructure throughout a plant.
  • Strong relationship management and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, and be flexible with several projects simultaneously with multiple teams.
  • Working experience with AutoCAD or Autodesk Plant 3D (P&ID) software required to generate and interpret P&IDs, PFDs and general arrangement drawings.
  • Solid understanding of chemical process safety management.
  • Experience with US and Canadian regulations, standards, and code compliance relating to engineering design and construction of explosives and hazardous materials facilities.
  • Ability to travel for project scoping & construction, site-support, audits, training, etc.
  • Must be willing to undergo and pass an ATF background check as required to be a possessor of explosives.
