About the position

Mathematica is searching for a Sr. Communications Specialist who will play a pivotal role in providing a comprehensive range of dissemination and engagement services. This position involves strategic planning and execution, message and content development, media relations, policymaker relations, and community engagement. The Sr. Communications Specialist will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic dissemination plans that align with client deliverables and organizational goals. This role requires a proactive approach to planning and executing diverse engagement activities that facilitate the application of evidence to policies and programs. The core responsibilities of the Sr. Communications Specialist include translating and disseminating policy-relevant evidence through various formats and channels. The specialist will collaborate with project teams, client representatives, and external partners to co-create strategic messaging and engagement plans that support project activities. Additionally, the role involves developing and maintaining a network of media contacts, pitching stories to relevant media outlets, and supporting government affairs colleagues in planning policymaker briefings and events. The Sr. Communications Specialist will also work closely with thought leadership and external partners to plan inclusive events that highlight diverse perspectives. This position requires a strong partnership with business unit leadership to develop strategies that promote brand awareness and support lead generation at professional conferences and events. The specialist will be responsible for writing compelling content for various platforms, including the company's website, newsletters, and social media. Furthermore, the role includes collaborating with subject matter experts to produce high-quality digital and print products that engage priority audiences. The specialist will also contribute to community engagement strategies and provide strategic communications counsel to project teams. In addition to these responsibilities, the Sr. Communications Specialist will actively support the advancement of organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, applying a DEI lens across all job responsibilities. Additional duties may be assigned as needed, making this a dynamic and impactful role within Mathematica.

Responsibilities

  • Translate and disseminate policy-relevant evidence through a variety of formats and channels.
  • Co-create strategic messaging, dissemination, and engagement plans with project teams, client representatives, and external partners.
  • Develop and implement strategic outreach campaigns, identifying and engaging primary and secondary audiences.
  • Maintain a network of media/journalist contacts; pitch and place stories in relevant media outlets.
  • Support planning and execution of policymaker briefings and events.
  • Plan and execute inclusive events, including thought leadership forums and project webinars.
  • Develop and implement strategies to promote brand awareness and support lead generation at conferences and events.
  • Write and develop content for the company's external website, engagement emails, newsletters, blog posts, podcasts, and social media.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to produce high-quality digital and print products.
  • Support project and proposal teams with community engagement strategies and provide strategic communications counsel.

Requirements

  • Excellent writing skills with minimal oversight and editing required.
  • Ability to synthesize and convey complex data and information for diverse audiences.
  • Thorough knowledge of international, federal, or state policy issues in health, education, early childhood, employment, family support, international development, and/or nutrition.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
  • Exceptional project management and client service skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Communications, Political Science, Journalism, or related field.
