About the position

Mathematica is searching for a Sr. Communications Specialist who will play a pivotal role in providing a comprehensive range of dissemination and engagement services. This position involves strategic planning and execution, message and content development, media relations, policymaker relations, and community engagement. The Sr. Communications Specialist will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic dissemination plans that align with client deliverables and organizational goals. This role requires planning and executing diverse engagement activities that facilitate the application of evidence to policies and programs, ensuring that the work is impactful and reaches the intended audiences. In this role, the Sr. Communications Specialist will translate and disseminate policy-relevant evidence through various formats and channels. Collaborating closely with project teams, client representatives, and external partners, the specialist will co-create strategic messaging and engagement plans that support project activities. This includes developing and implementing outreach campaigns, identifying and engaging primary and secondary audiences, and establishing relevant engagement metrics to measure success. The position also entails maintaining a robust network of media and journalist contacts, regularly pitching and placing stories in national, local, and trade media outlets. The specialist will support government affairs and project colleagues in planning and executing policymaker briefings and events, as well as collaborating with thought leadership and external partners to plan inclusive events that highlight diverse perspectives from the field. Additionally, the Sr. Communications Specialist will partner with business unit leadership to develop strategies that promote brand awareness and support lead generation at professional conferences and events. Writing compelling content for various platforms, including the company's external website, newsletters, and social media, is a key responsibility. The specialist will also work with subject matter experts to produce high-quality digital and print products that effectively engage priority audiences. Furthermore, the role involves supporting project and proposal teams by developing innovative strategies for community engagement and dissemination, contributing to budget assumptions, and providing strategic communications counsel. The Sr. Communications Specialist will actively support the advancement of organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, applying a DEI lens across all job responsibilities. Additional duties may be assigned as needed, making this a dynamic and impactful role within Mathematica.

Responsibilities

  • Translate and disseminate policy-relevant evidence through a variety of formats and channels.
  • Co-create strategic messaging, dissemination, and engagement plans with project teams, client representatives, and external partners.
  • Develop and implement strategic outreach campaigns, identifying and engaging primary and secondary audiences.
  • Maintain a network of media/journalist contacts; pitch and place stories in relevant media outlets.
  • Support planning and execution of policymaker briefings and events.
  • Collaborate in planning and executing inclusive events, including thought leadership forums and webinars.
  • Partner with business unit leadership to develop strategies that promote brand awareness and lead generation.
  • Write and support the development of content for the company's external website, newsletters, and social media platforms.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to produce high-quality digital and print products.
  • Support project and proposal teams with community engagement strategies and provide strategic communications counsel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Political Science, Journalism, or related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible, professional-level experience in a government organization, public relations, or a research or policy-oriented organization.
  • Excellent writing skills with minimal oversight and editing required.
  • Ability to synthesize and convey complex data and information for diverse audiences.
  • Thorough knowledge of international, federal, or state policy issues in health, education, early childhood, employment, family support, international development, and/or nutrition.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
  • Exceptional project management and client service skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and work independently.
