About the position

FirstEnergy Service Company is a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., a public utility holding company headquartered in Akron, Ohio. The company is involved in the transmission and distribution of electricity to over six million retail customers across six states and is subject to extensive regulation by state and federal agencies. The position of Sr. Corporate Attorney focuses on federal regulatory law, particularly concerning PJM and Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) tariffs and matters before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The attorney will provide legal advice to internal clients regarding federal wholesale power markets and transmission policy, including RTO power markets and generation resource adequacy. The attorney will also support FirstEnergy's transmission investment business plan and participate in PJM stakeholder processes. Responsibilities include advising FirstEnergy executives and business units on legal issues affecting the business, managing outside counsel, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders on complex regulatory litigation. The role requires extensive legal research, particularly on Administrative Procedure Act regulatory agency rules and adjudications, and may involve appellate litigation. The attorney will draft and review legal documents and provide strategic and business advice to internal clients.

Responsibilities

  • Handle legal matters in federal public utility regulatory law, focusing on PJM and other RTO markets and transmission matters before FERC and other tribunals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external counsel, consultants, business unit staff, and industry stakeholders on project assignments.
  • Perform legal research with emphasis on Administrative Procedure Act regulatory agency rules and adjudications, including follow-on appellate litigation.
  • Draft and review legal and other documents as required.
  • Advise internal business clients and other FirstEnergy counsel on relevant legal matters.
  • Provide legal, strategic, and business advice to executives and business units.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited university.
  • Member in good standing of at least one state bar.
  • 7-10 years of litigation experience, with FERC experience preferred; experience with state utility regulatory work is a plus.
  • Strong work ethic and demonstrated ability to understand new areas.
