About the position

The Sr Field Service Engineer - Lab Instrument Services position at CBRE focuses on providing technical maintenance services for laboratory equipment in critical client environments, primarily within the Greater Chicago region. This role is part of the Full Spectrum Lab Services offered by CBRE, which caters to a diverse clientele in the life sciences sector, including pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical devices, and genomics. The engineer will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including the repair, calibration, and maintenance of specialized laboratory equipment, ensuring that all instruments operate efficiently and meet regulatory standards. In this role, the engineer will take apart, examine, clean, fix, calibrate, and maintain various equipment and systems. They will operate test equipment such as multimeters, frequency generators, and oscilloscopes, and coordinate the removal of equipment that requires extensive repairs during scheduled maintenance periods. Troubleshooting and resolving issues during unscheduled work will also be a key responsibility, along with documenting any abnormal functions or out-of-tolerance conditions of the equipment. The engineer will work closely with external contractors and customer staff to ensure that all repairs and calibrations are performed according to maintenance agreements. The position requires a proactive approach to tracking instrument and part reliability, making recommendations for alternate services and suppliers, and overseeing the development of maintenance and calibration procedures. The engineer will also be expected to lead by example, embodying the values of CBRE, and to work within standardized procedures to achieve objectives and meet deadlines. This role is crucial in maintaining the quality and reliability of laboratory operations, impacting the overall success of the services provided to clients.

Responsibilities

  • Take apart, examine, clean, fix, calibrate, check, and take care of special equipment, systems, and controls.
  • Operate test equipment including multimeters, frequency generators, and oscilloscopes.
  • Coordinate the removal of equipment requiring extensive repairs during scheduled maintenance periods.
  • Troubleshoot, service or resolve problems while performing unscheduled work.
  • Record and report abnormal functions or out-of-tolerance conditions of equipment, starting corrective action and documentation as needed.
  • Review and document daily records of inspections, maintenance activity, repairs, and other work performed.
  • Coordinate with external contractors on repairs covered by maintenance agreements.
  • Communicate with customer staff and outside contractors about the calibration, repair, and operation of equipment.
  • Locate part sources, estimate costs, and prepare requisitions.
  • Track instrument and part reliability; make alternate service, supplier, and parts recommendations.
  • Oversee the development of equipment, maintenance, and calibration procedures.
  • Lead by example and model behaviors that are consistent with CBRE RISE values.
  • Impact the quality of own work and work within standardized procedures to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
  • Exchange straightforward information, ask questions, and check for understanding.

Requirements

  • 4 year degree in a related field; 2-3 years of job-related experience. In lieu of a diploma, a combination of experience and education will be considered.
  • Must have appropriate license or certification where required by law.
  • OEM or 3rd party repair experience.
  • Major electronic or mechanical repair experience on a chromatography related system.
  • Proficiency with instrumentation/technology such as Agilent/MassHunter/OpenLab, Sciex/MultiQuant, Shimadzu, Waters, Thermo.
  • Meet the physical requirements of this role including stooping, standing, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, and the ability to lift/carry heavy loads of 50 lbs. or more.
  • Ability to use existing procedures to solve standard problems.
  • Experience with analyzing information and standard practices to make judgments.
  • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Organizational skills with a strong inquisitive mindset.
  • Intermediate math skills, including the ability to calculate difficult figures such as percentages, fractions, and other financial-related calculations.
