About the position

The Sr Systems Administrator plays a critical role in ensuring the availability, reliability, security, and stability of the IT infrastructure. This position requires advanced judgment and analytical skills to evaluate, select, install, and maintain systems software and hardware. The Sr Systems Administrator will be responsible for monitoring systems and serving as a focal point for support, ensuring that all systems are functioning optimally. This role also involves planning for the future by setting and documenting direction for the information systems infrastructure within their area of responsibility. In this position, the Sr Systems Administrator will independently analyze, isolate, and diagnose complex problems, recommending and implementing remedial actions. They will apply advanced technical methodologies to the computing infrastructure, monitor operating efficiencies, and assist in capacity planning. The role includes reviewing, evaluating, and recommending new or upgraded systems software packages and related hardware based on established standards. Additionally, the Sr Systems Administrator will develop detailed implementation plans based on architectural plans and oversee the complete implementation process. As a Technical Lead on medium to large enterprise projects, the Sr Systems Administrator will transform business requirements into technical architecture requirements, designing application architectures that are scalable, robust, and manageable while balancing price and performance. They will work closely with vendors to ensure that supporting operating systems comply with applications, including maintaining required patch levels, hot fixes, and revisions. Furthermore, the role involves implementing application and database high availability techniques and application/network security concepts, ensuring the integrity and security of the IT infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, isolate, and diagnose complex problems independently, recommending and implementing resolutions.
  • Apply advanced technical methodologies to the computing infrastructure, monitor operating efficiencies, and assist in capacity planning.
  • Review, evaluate, and recommend new or upgraded systems software packages and related hardware based on established standards.
  • Develop detailed implementation plans based on architectural plans and oversee complete implementation.
  • Serve as Technical Lead on medium to large enterprise projects according to division standards and requirements.
  • Transform business requirements into technical architecture requirements and design scalable, robust, and manageable application architectures.
  • Work closely with vendors to ensure compliance of supporting operating systems with applications, including required patch levels, hot fixes, and revisions.
  • Implement application and database high availability techniques and application/network security concepts.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of systems administration experience and 0-2 years of project or technical consultant responsibility.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering, with a minimum of 24 semester hours of computer-related courses, or two additional years of direct work experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Ability to work hybrid or on-site as directed by management based on business needs.
  • United States Citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance if required for the position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Trunked Radio / P25 Core & Console / Land Mobile Radio (LMR) infrastructure & subscriber programming experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of specific operating systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Windows Server), servers, peripheral devices, and workstations.
  • Highly skilled in scripting tools (like PowerShell, Puppet, Perl, Python) to support database, web, and application administration.
  • Proven ability to mentor peers and identify appropriate training to improve the team's technical bench strength.
  • Knowledge and experience with installation, configuration, and administration of enterprise web services, application servers, databases, clustering backup and recovery systems, portals, firewalls, virtual private networks, terminal services, authentication and authorization, collaboration, and load balancing.
