Responsibilities

  • Independently perform and report general and/or specialized laboratory tests in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical services and laboratory support information to staff and providers.
  • Function as the lead when the department supervisor is not available.
  • Perform laboratory tests and report results with appropriate documentation in a timely, efficient, and accurate manner.
  • Validate test results in the Laboratory Information System for accurate reports to be generated for physician review.
  • Perform all LIS functions relative to the scope of responsibility including worklists, outstanding reports, patient registration, etc.
  • Perform quality control for all testing and assure that results meet established criteria before releasing test results.
  • Recognize factors that may affect measurements and results, and take appropriate action.
  • Report low supply inventory to appropriate staff and ensure uninterrupted testing by informing personnel when supplies fall below par level.
  • Recognize instrument or equipment failures and evaluate problems, taking appropriate action to troubleshoot or contact individuals for corrective action.
  • Prepare samples appropriately for testing and maintain glassware and other materials necessary for clinical laboratory tests.
  • May operate a blood irradiator requiring FBI security clearance.
  • May temporarily assume supervisory responsibility of section during the absence of the supervisor.
  • May be assigned to function as the Scheduler and prepare monthly department work schedule under the oversight of the lab management team.
  • Help keep department overtime to a minimum and maintain daily, weekly, and monthly assignments for the Technologist staff to ensure coverage in all locations.
  • Ensure new hired technologists are scheduled to receive proper assistance and support until they are thoroughly trained.

Requirements

  • Minimal Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related scientific field, additional specialty training or course study acknowledged.
  • ASCP registry or equivalent registry or eligible.
  • 3 years of work experience at TSH or 7 years if not.
  • Must be competent in 4 laboratory sections as a generalist.
  • Requires knowledge of principles and practices of laboratory science and minimal computer skills.
  • May require an FBI check prior to beginning employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in training new employees.
  • Ability to perform inventory and stock management.
  • Experience in developing and implementing new procedures/instruments/processes.
  • Ability to review QC and troubleshoot appropriately when results require action.
  • Experience in conducting correlation studies, calibration, and linearity procedures.
