About the position

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD-OTS) is seeking an experienced Sr Principal Chemical Engineer to join our Huntsville team. This position is crucial as we support the mission of the warfighter, providing products that are integral to every U.S. military branch and our allies around the world. The ideal candidate will perform engineering work related to the operation of chemical plant equipment and processes, applying advanced principles, theories, and concepts in the propulsion field. A working knowledge of related disciplines such as thermal, structural, and ballistics analysis is essential. The Sr Principal Chemical Engineer will leverage broad knowledge and experience with energetics, solid propellants, and related materials and products. The role requires substantial experience with physics-based modeling of technologies such as polymer mechanics, environmental degradation and aging, combustion, detonation, particle packing, and rheology. Candidates with substantial experience in propellant/explosive formulation for product development, energetic material manufacturing and synthesis, energetic material hazards analysis, and physical testing and characterization of propellant and subsystems are preferred. In this role, you will conduct research and development projects that involve studying chemical reactions and material properties to innovate and develop new products or optimize existing ones. You will design experiments, build prototypes, and models to support the development of improved chemicals, materials, products, and manufacturing processes. Additionally, you will compile and analyze testing data, present research results, and maintain lab and plant safety procedures for chemical storage, handling, transport, and disposal, ensuring compliance with all safety and environmental regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research and development projects involving the study of chemical reactions and material properties to innovate and develop new products or optimize existing products.
  • Designs experiments and builds prototypes and models used to investigate and support the development of improved chemicals, materials, products, and manufacturing processes.
  • Compiles and analyzes testing data.
  • Presents research results used to estimate costs, establish performance standards, identify solutions, and facilitate decision-making.
  • Maintains lab and plant safety procedures for chemical storage, handling, transport, and disposal.
  • Complies with all safety and environmental regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or other engineering field required.
  • 10-12 years of experience in chemical engineering, manufacturing process engineering, product development, and research and development.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Critical thinking and analytical thinking skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with energetic material hazards analysis, testing, and mitigation strategy development.
  • Experience in case bondline development, processing, and adhesion science.
