About the position

The Hanover is seeking a Senior Sales Underwriting Specialist for the Middle Market department in New Jersey. This full-time, exempt role is hybrid, allowing for a blend of in-office and remote work. The primary responsibility of this position is to identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal Middle Market accounts that drive profitable growth while aligning with the company's industry segments, appetite, and mix goals. The successful candidate will apply advanced technical, sales, and analytical skills to provide insurance solutions that help Hanover's customers manage risk effectively. In this role, the Sales Underwriter will demonstrate a thorough understanding of Hanover's strategies and appetites, utilizing both internal and external data to make informed individual and portfolio risk decisions. The position operates within a broad Letter of Authority for all underwriting decisions and requires limited direction while managing an assigned book of business, which generally involves high technical complexity and coordination. The role encompasses various essential functions, including technical underwriting, portfolio management, financial acumen, sales acumen, and customer advocacy. The Sales Underwriter will be responsible for applying advanced underwriting concepts, managing an assigned portfolio to achieve key metrics, and driving effective relationship management with agents and customers. This position also involves making sales presentations and engaging with customers at a high level to secure business opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, solicit, underwrite, and sell new and renewal Middle Market accounts.
  • Apply advanced underwriting concepts including risk selection, exposure and hazard identification, and loss analysis.
  • Utilize appropriate underwriting tools to ensure guidelines are followed.
  • Manage assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium, profitability, and retention goals.
  • Review key metrics to uncover trends that may lead to new business opportunities.
  • Prepare or analyze information on adverse underwriting decisions and rate appeals.
  • Identify, solicit, pipeline, negotiate, and close accounts aligned with branch strategy.
  • Profile assigned agency plant and strategically market capabilities to agents.
  • Implement territory business plans and monitor performance for future growth.
  • Make sales presentations to agents and customers on complex accounts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3-7+ years of Underwriting experience, with a minimum of 3 years underwriting Middle Market accounts.
  • 3+ years of experience driving agency relationships resulting in profitable new and renewal business.
