About the position

As a Senior Underwriter / Assistant Vice President (AVP) in the North American Excess Casualty Division at Allied World National Assurance, you will play a pivotal role in managing and expanding a portfolio of general casualty business. This position requires a strong focus on underwriting discipline while actively marketing and servicing both existing and potential retail clients. The primary emphasis will be on retail distribution, particularly targeting construction, real estate, and products liability risks. Your expertise will be essential in navigating the complexities of underwriting within these sectors, ensuring that all operations align with the company's strategic objectives and guidelines. In this role, you will be responsible for performing thorough account analyses in accordance with Allied World (US) General Casualty guidelines. You will develop account pricing, structure, and terms, making informed recommendations based on your assessments. Additionally, you will be tasked with preparing quotes, binders, and underwriting worksheets, ensuring that all documentation adheres to company standards. Maintaining organized files that comply with company guidelines is also a critical aspect of your responsibilities. As a Senior Underwriter, you will have the opportunity to delegate and supervise work to Account Coordinators as needed, fostering a collaborative environment. Your role will also involve attending client meetings, lunches, dinners, and other social outings to strengthen relationships and enhance business opportunities. Marketing to retailers within your assigned region and engaging in production meetings will be key components of your strategy to grow the business. Furthermore, you will collaborate with the Legal department for manuscript wording analysis and preparation, ensuring that all legal aspects are thoroughly addressed. Your ability to interact with senior management on referral items will be crucial, as will your willingness to train and mentor Underwriting Trainees and Junior Underwriters, contributing to the development of the next generation of underwriting professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Perform account analysis according to Allied World (US) General Casualty guidelines
  • Develop account pricing, structure and terms and make recommendations
  • Perform and document referrals
  • Prepare quotes, binders, and underwriting worksheets within company guidelines
  • Maintain files in an orderly manner consistent with company guidelines
  • Delegate and supervise work to Account Coordinators as needed
  • Attend client meetings, lunches, dinners, and other social outings as applicable
  • Market to retailers within assigned region and engage production meetings
  • Work with Legal department for manuscript wording analysis and preparation as needed
  • Interact with senior management on referral items and train Underwriting Trainees and Junior Underwriters.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in underwriting, particularly in general casualty business
  • Strong analytical skills to perform account analysis and pricing
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for client interactions
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, including Legal and Account Coordinators
  • Experience in marketing and servicing retail clients, especially in construction and real estate sectors
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain orderly files and documentation.
