About the position

Citizens, Inc. is seeking a Senior Underwriter to join our team in Austin, TX. This full-time exempt position reports directly to the VP/Head of Underwriting. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to quickly assess situations, apply established underwriting guidelines, and collaborate effectively with others. The role requires a detail-oriented mindset and critical thinking skills, as well as the initiative to work consultatively with team members. The Senior Underwriter will be responsible for managing an average case load daily while ensuring timely turnaround times for underwriting decisions. In this position, you will analyze information on insurance applications to determine the risk of insuring clients. You will screen applications based on set criteria, evaluate recommendations from underwriting manuals, and make informed decisions on whether to offer insurance. Additionally, you will determine appropriate premiums and coverage amounts, and engage with agents and independent consultants to gather further information. The role also involves participation in educational seminars and local underwriting meetings to enhance professional development. As a Senior Underwriter, you will have the opportunity to mentor junior underwriters and New Business Specialists, fostering a culture of growth and leadership within the team. You will work closely with the VP/Head of Underwriting on application creation and revision, product development, and process improvement initiatives. Your analytical skills will be crucial in identifying technological opportunities and enhancing underwriting guidelines. Responsibilities

  • Analyze information on insurance applications
  • Determine the risk of insuring the client
  • Screen applications based on set criteria
  • Evaluate recommendations from underwriting manuals
  • Recommend whether to offer insurance
  • Determine appropriate premiums and amounts of coverage
  • Contact Agents, Independent Consultants, and others to obtain further information
  • Participate in educational seminars, webinars, and local underwriting meetings
  • Maintain an excellent attendance record
  • Work with the VP/Head of Underwriting in application creation/revision and product development
  • Conduct daily Random Hold Out Audits/Reviews and Reinsurance Administration
  • Identify process improvement and technological opportunities
  • Build rapport and establish goodwill with agents and independent consultants
  • Provide mentorship and leadership to junior underwriters and New Business Specialists

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; insurance-related work experience and strong computer skills may be acceptable
  • Courses in business, finance, economics, and mathematics are particularly helpful
  • Certifications: Fellow of Life Management Institute, Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting working towards Chartered Life Underwriter title, LUTCF designations, or other industry-related designations
  • Expected to get certification through coursework; Certification and Continuing Education is required; Must have FLMI and FALU designations; Working towards CLU or LUTCF designations
  • Successful completion of basic EKG training
  • Proven experience with Final Expense Underwriting
  • Preferably bilingual: English, Spanish
  • Ability to establish rapport and build relationships in a professional manner
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate and escalate issues to management
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well in a team-based environment
  • Strong math and/or financial skills
  • Ability to achieve a balance between risky and cautious decisions
  • Ability to work in multiple systems and applications
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with internal/external stakeholders
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment shaped by constant change and innovation
  • Must be fully proficient with SharePoint and Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
