About the position

MRIGlobal is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Integrated Defense Solutions Business Unit as a Staff Chemist in Charlottesville, VA. This position is ideal for someone with a strong background in analytical chemistry, particularly in gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team of scientists engaged in chemical forensics and analysis, contributing to the development of technically sound solutions to real-world problems. As a Staff Chemist, you will play a crucial role in supporting and directing research and development laboratory activities. This includes gaining a thorough understanding of relevant federal programs, quality assurance, safety protocols, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). You will be expected to apply your knowledge of GC-MS theory and practical operation to creatively resolve problems and meet client expectations and deadlines. Additionally, this position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance, which necessitates U.S. citizenship. Your responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks, including direct and/or perform standard preparation, sample preparation, and sample analysis. You will operate, maintain, and troubleshoot various analytical instruments, develop analytical methods, prepare SOPs, and perform technical reviews of analytical data and reports. Furthermore, you will be involved in writing or contributing to technical proposals, reports, and papers for publication or presentation, ensuring that results are clear and conclusions are well-supported. Interaction with clients to provide updates and summaries of testing results will also be a key aspect of your role.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and/or perform various standard preparation, sample preparation, and sample analysis tasks.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of analytical instrumentation.
  • Development of analytical methods.
  • Prepare Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Perform technical reviews of analytical data and reports.
  • Write or contribute to technical proposals, reports, and/or papers for publication or presentation with clear results and concise, well-supported conclusions.
  • Interact with clients to provide updates and summaries of testing results.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field; M.S. in Chemistry or related field with a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or B.S. in Chemistry or related field with a minimum of 6-8 years of related experience, or an appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Strong organizational skills, problem-solving aptitude, and adaptability to changing priorities.
  • Possess excellent legible and logical laboratory records documentation.
  • PC skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project, and Outlook) and ability to learn new software and systems.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and eligible to obtain a Department of Defense Clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior industry experience with GC/LC/MS instrumentation including Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), Gas Chromatography - High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (GC-HRMS), and Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry / Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
  • Familiarity with keeping laboratory areas up to date on safety and security requirements.
  • Prior leadership roles with strong organizational skills, problem-solving aptitude, and adaptability to changing priorities.
  • Experience maintaining legible and logical laboratory records documentation.
