About the position

Form Energy is an American manufacturing and energy technology company focused on revolutionizing energy storage with cost-effective, multi-day technology designed to keep the electric grid secure and reliable. The Mechanical Engineering team is responsible for designing the battery cell, module, and system enclosure that forms the foundation of the innovative utility-scale multi-day energy storage system. The company is currently seeking a Senior Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to lead design efforts for crucial parts of the iron-air battery enclosure, emphasizing structural design, optimization, and manufacturability of metal enclosures. This role involves creatively tackling mechanical design challenges and collaborating cross-functionally to deliver designs that meet requirements and improve upon existing solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Create white-page designs for Form Energy's Gen 2 product enclosure and module designs
  • Perform hands-on prototyping of designs and collaborate with broader teams to build integrated prototypes
  • Work with consulting companies, vendors, manufacturing engineers, and technical operations to transition designs from prototype to high volume production
  • Run and analyze trials to inform specifications and future design direction
  • Release designs consistent with company and team best practices (drawings, tolerance analysis, etc.)
  • Drive verification testing of design work
  • Perform failure root cause analysis on systems and assemblies
  • Travel 1 week a month to other Form Energy offices or vendor sites

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Bachelor's with 9+ years, or Master's with industry experience in mechanical design
  • Experience leading design work for complex mechanical systems
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), specifically SolidWorks modeling and drafting
  • Proficient in component design for mass manufacturing and assembly (DFMA), especially sheet metal, stampings, weldments and extruded components
  • Proficient with prototyping techniques and working in a machine shop environment
  • Familiarity with mechanical verification testing
