About the position

Form Energy is at the forefront of revolutionizing energy storage with our innovative iron-air battery technology. As a Staff Mechanical Engineer on the Advanced Product Development team, you will play a pivotal role in designing components for our next-generation utility-scale multi-day energy storage systems. This position is not just about engineering; it's about contributing to a mission that aims to make renewable energy reliable and affordable for everyone. You will be involved in early-phase engineering, evaluating alternative concepts, and selecting the best design paths to meet operational performance targets while ensuring cost-effectiveness and high reliability. Your responsibilities will include creating foundational designs for our Gen 2 product, performing hands-on prototyping, and collaborating with various teams to build integrated prototypes. You will work closely with consulting companies, vendors, and manufacturing engineers to transition designs from the prototype stage to high-volume production. This role requires a strong emphasis on design for manufacturing and assembly, as well as a creative approach to solving mechanical design challenges. You will also be responsible for defining requirements, developing verification plans, conducting failure analysis, and troubleshooting design problems as they arise. Responsibilities

  • Create white-page designs that will be the foundation of Form Energy's Gen 2 product
  • Perform hands-on prototyping of designs and collaborate with broader teams to build integrated prototypes
  • Work with consulting companies, vendors, manufacturing engineers, and technical operations to transition designs from the prototype stage to high volume production
  • Run and analyze trials to inform specifications and future designs
  • Troubleshoot design problems as they arise and implement improvements
  • Define requirements and develop verification plans for designs
  • Conduct failure analysis to ensure reliability and performance of designs

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly principles
  • Experience with plastic and metal component design for mass production
  • Proficiency in CAD software and engineering analysis tools
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with various teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills and creativity in tackling design challenges

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in energy storage or renewable energy technologies
  • Familiarity with high-volume manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of prototyping techniques and materials
