About the position

The Staff Research Associate 2 (SRA 2 NEX) at the University of California Davis Health System will play a crucial role in supporting the operations of Autism BrainNet at the UC Davis MIND Institute. This position involves providing technical, scientific, and organizational assistance in the daily tasks related to tissue processing, histology, and tissue distribution. The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational background or relevant experience in histological processing of brain tissue, complemented by effective interpersonal, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills. The role requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment. As part of the Autism BrainNet team, the incumbent will engage in a histological core that processes human brain tissue, which is essential for autism research. This collaborative network, funded by the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI), is dedicated to collecting, storing, and distributing postmortem brain tissue to support rigorous research into the genetic and neuropathological mechanisms contributing to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related neurodevelopmental conditions. The SRA 2 will be responsible for maintaining detailed and accurate records, ensuring compliance with laboratory protocols, and effectively identifying resources to solve problems as they arise. The UC Davis MIND Institute is an interdisciplinary center committed to enhancing the scientific understanding of autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions. It encompasses a diverse team of over 250 faculty and staff from various academic departments, with significant funding and resources dedicated to research and clinical education. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful research while working in a supportive and dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and scientific assistance in tissue processing and histology operations.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of laboratory activities and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to process human brain tissue for research purposes.
  • Utilize cryostats and other histological techniques for sectioning and staining tissue samples.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory protocols and safety regulations.
  • Identify resources and solutions to address challenges in tissue processing and distribution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in conducting research studies in a Neuroscience-related discipline or a Bachelor's degree in Medical Histology with relevant experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a histology laboratory with basic histology lab skills.
  • Experience using cryostat for sectioning of brain tissue.
  • Knowledge of histological principles and basic laboratory techniques.
  • Experience or working knowledge with human or animal brain tissue.
  • Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Proficiency in computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Photoshop.
