About The Position

The Staff Software Engineer II at Confluent is responsible for architecting and developing high-quality solutions for Kora, a cloud-native event streaming platform for Kafka. This role focuses on building a highly available, reliable, secure, scalable, and multi-tenant compute layer, driving performance tuning and optimization, and collaborating with engineering teams to enhance system performance.

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or PhD in computer science or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • 2+ years of relevant cloud infrastructure/cloud networking experience
  • Strong fundamentals in distributed systems design and development
  • Experience building and operating large-scale systems in the Cloud
  • Solid understanding of basic systems operations (disk, network, operating systems, etc)
  • A self-starter with the ability to work effectively in teams
  • Proficiency in Java, Scala, C/C++, Go or other statically typed languages.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong understanding of performance analysis methodologies, tools, and metrics
  • Experience with distributed systems, cloud environments, and performance analysis
  • Knowledge of Kafka
  • In-depth familiarity with the JVM or any other memory management systems
  • A strong background in distributed storage systems or databases
  • Experience in the areas of resource management and QoS
  • Experience/knowledge with public clouds (AWS, Azure or GCP)
  • Interest in evangelism (giving talks at tech conferences, writing blog posts evangelizing Kafka)
  • Experience working on databases or data storage.

Responsibilities

  • Develop strategies to optimize Kafka performance for scalability, resilience, and high availability aligned with organizational goals.
  • Conduct analysis and tuning of Confluent Kafka offerings to meet performance requirements under various loads.
  • Build tools to measure key performance metrics, providing insights into efficiency and resource utilization.
  • Establish monitoring systems for metrics, proactively identifying and resolving performance issues in production.
  • Lead and mentor performance engineers, offering guidance and support to ensure platform efficiency across deployments.
