About the position

Orbital Engineering, Inc. is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join our Memphis, Tennessee office. This role is pivotal in assisting with both single and multi-discipline projects, particularly in heavy industrial engineering sectors such as Metals, Midstream Oil & Gas, Refineries & Petrochemical, and Utilities & Power Generation. The Structural Engineer will engage in various responsibilities that encompass detailed engineering design, project execution, technical support, and the development of customer relationships. The ideal candidate will work closely with business partners to create, improve, and sustain industry and infrastructure, aligning with Orbital's core purpose of solving complex problems through innovative engineering, inspection, and construction solutions. The position requires a strong commitment to building trusted relationships, personal accountability, and excellence in all tasks. Key responsibilities include conducting field engineering and structural inspections, assisting with engineering studies and calculations, and developing detailed design documents and specifications. The Structural Engineer will also perform analytical modeling of structures using STAAD software, review calculations and drawings produced by other engineers, and design structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and foundations. Additionally, the role involves managing project progress in relation to plans, schedules, and budgets, while contributing to workflow improvements and maintaining technical standards.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field engineering and structural inspections related to work scope.
  • Assist with engineering studies, calculations, detailed design documents, and specifications.
  • Provide project cost estimates and installation support services.
  • Perform analytical modeling of structures and components using STAAD software.
  • Review calculations, drawings, and reports produced by other structural engineers.
  • Design structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and foundations.
  • Develop, maintain, and upgrade technical standards/specifications for projects.
  • Complete tasks in accordance with design and project execution procedures as per the corporate Quality Management System.
  • Provide technical support for customers and assist in regional business development initiatives.
  • Manage project progress relative to project plan, schedule, and budget.
  • Contribute to company improvements in workflow and methods of work execution.

Requirements

  • BS in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) years of prior professional experience in structural engineering.
  • Experience with structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and/or foundation design.
  • Working knowledge of STAAD analytical software or equivalent.
  • Exposure to the Metals, Midstream Oil & Gas, Refineries & Petrochemical, and/or Utilities & Power Generation industries is preferred.
  • Ability to perform field inspections at higher elevations.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Pennsylvania or ability to obtain one.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Inspection experience.
