The Substitute Building Assistant position at Westerly High School is a temporary role designed to support various clerical needs as directed by the School Principal and Nurse Teacher. The responsibilities of the Substitute Building Assistant are diverse and require a proactive approach to assist in various tasks that contribute to the overall efficiency of the school environment. In this role, the assistant will be responsible for copying and distributing a multitude of materials for teachers, students, parents, and the Principal or their designee. This includes tasks such as laminating, binding, and faxing documents as necessary. The assistant will also maintain the copy machines, which involves ordering supplies and making service calls when needed. Additionally, the role requires responding to the door and telephone calls in the main office, greeting visitors, and potentially escorting them to their destinations within the building. The Substitute Building Assistant may also provide assistance during lunch periods in the cafeteria and cover classrooms for short periods, up to 10 minutes, as required. Other responsibilities include assisting ambulatory students to their classrooms, making phone calls to confirm child absences, entering data using various software, and assisting the school nurse with clinic tasks. The role may also involve helping with the completion and distribution of report cards, which includes preparing envelopes, delivering them to classrooms, and faxing for corrections. Overall, the position is dynamic and requires flexibility to adapt to the needs of the school community.

Responsibilities

  • Copies and distributes a multitude of materials for teachers, students, parents and Principal or designee.
  • As necessary, laminates, binds, faxes documents.
  • Maintains copy machines including but not limited to ordering supplies, and making service calls.
  • Respond to the door as necessary.
  • Respond to telephone calls in the main office as necessary.
  • Greets visitors as necessary.
  • May be required to escort visitors to locations in the building.
  • May be required to provide assistance during lunch periods in the cafeteria.
  • May be required to provide classroom coverage for up to 10 minutes periodically.
  • May be required to assist ambulatory students to a classroom periodically.
  • May be required to make phone calls confirming child absences.
  • May be required to enter data using various software.
  • May be required to assist school nurse in clinic tasks.
  • May be required to assist in completion and distribution of report cards including but not limited to completion of envelopes, delivery to classrooms and faxing for corrections.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have understanding of office machinery including but not limited to copy machines, laminators, fax machines or fax capability on copiers, printers and basic computer experience.
  • Must be able to perform basic arithmetic for maintaining records and inventory.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Must have basic customer service skills necessary for greeting visitors and answering phones and doors.
  • Prefer three years' experience in any customer service setting.
  • Authorized to work in the USA.
  • Current national background check without disqualifying results at time of hire.
