About the position

The Johnston Community School District is seeking a dedicated and qualified Substitute Special Education Teacher for Wallace Elementary School. This position is anticipated to start in August 2024 and will last for approximately 12 weeks. The daily substitute rate begins at $165, increasing to $185 after the 11th consecutive day and reaching $235 after the 21st consecutive day. The ideal candidate will possess a valid Iowa Teaching or Substitute license and demonstrate punctuality and attendance, regularly beginning and ending tasks on time. The role requires the ability to foster positive interpersonal relationships and work cooperatively with students, parents, and staff, while projecting a positive image of the educator in the school and community. The teacher must respect differing points of view and demonstrate an understanding and acceptance of diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, gender, special needs, and religious groups. Confidentiality is paramount, and the teacher is expected to actively support expectations of student behavior outside of the classroom during the school day. A positive attitude and the ability to manage stress constructively are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain rapport with students and demonstrate appropriate instructional preparation.
  • Use knowledge of students to design educational experiences that align with district standards and assessments.
  • Design lessons that are appropriate to age level and student interest, ensuring a logical flow of learning.
  • Utilize district-provided technologies and employ a variety of instructional techniques and strategies including multi-sensory approaches, appropriate questioning, and activity-based learning.
  • Modify lesson plans and instructional techniques as required by student learning styles and ensure instruction is free of cultural, religious, ethnic, or gender bias.
  • Respond positively and constructively to student questions and provide opportunities for student success.
  • Model and promote honesty, respect for people and property, responsibility for personal and group actions, personal integrity, and the value of hard work.
  • Use effective assessment strategies that relate directly to core curricular concepts and are integral to teaching and learning.
