About the position

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and Camp Program Coordinator, the Camp Director is responsible for the planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of a comprehensive summer day camp program for youth ages 5 to 15. The Camp Director is primarily responsible for all daily operations at the Summer Camp program site.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, implementing, and supervising all daily operations of the youth summer day camp program
  • Assigns work schedules; supervises and evaluates program staff
  • Has daily contact with participant parents and resolves conflicts as needed
  • Has daily contact with program participants and provides support to Camp Counselors in the management of participants as needed
  • Maintains accountability of and is responsible for the health and safety of all program participants
  • Responsible for enforcing the rules and regulations of the Town of Vernon and Vernon Parks & Recreation Department
  • Responsible for completing required program documentation in a timely manner
  • Plans and leads staff meetings and program special events
  • Maintains facility and equipment in a safe condition
  • Screens participant health information and plans accordingly for their participation in the program
  • Considered a first responder for medical emergency action procedures
  • Maintain and model a positive attitude for other staff
  • Performs related work as required

Requirements

  • 21 years of age or older
  • General knowledge of a variety of recreation skills such as arts and crafts, music, physical fitness, nature, team and individual games, etc.
  • Ability to work with children ages 5-13 and possess an understanding of their social, emotional, and physical development and needs
  • A minimum of 16 weeks previous experience in an organized day camp setting, or has obtained a college degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Education, or a related field
  • Possess current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification or able to obtain one prior to start date
  • Possesses a valid CT Drivers License and reliable access to transportation
  • Strong leadership and administrative skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with parents, participants, and other Town employees
  • Ability to organize data and maintain records

Benefits

  • Hourly Rate: $21.00-$21.50/hr
