About the position

The Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) is a non-profit organization established in 1976 to serve immigrants, refugees, and the broader community in Portland, Oregon. Our mission is to welcome, serve and empower refugees, immigrants and people across cultures and generations to reach their full potential. The SUN Reasonable Accommodations Assistant works under the SUN Site Manager to provide one on one support to a program participant based on the needs of the participant as outlined in the Multnomah County Reasonable Accommodations request. Programs are in-person, located at school sites around outer N/NE/SE Portland.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain 1:1 support to the program participant as required to support their successful participation in SUN activities
  • Follow all school district and IRCO safety protocols related to working with youth in school communities
  • Treat youth and fellow staff respectfully while executing classroom management and adhering to school rules
  • Record and report accurate attendance to SUN Manager
  • Provide culturally responsive communication, outreach and engagement with students and families
  • Communicate effectively with SUN Site Manager and parents about student’s success, concerns, or questions
  • Be a consistent and reliable staff member during the entire session of extended day/after school programming
  • Effectively communicate work availability and absences (in advance, when possible)
  • Attend all SUN staff meetings and session orientations
  • Effectively work with individuals with special needs and diverse backgrounds
  • Understand the role of 'mandatory reporter' and communicate any concerns related to student safety to the SUN Manager in a timely manner

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background check
  • High School degree or equivalent is preferred. Experience in the field may be considered as equivalent.
  • Bilingual/bicultural applicants are encouraged to apply
  • Willingness to complete training on child abuse reporting and classroom management skills annually
  • Enthusiastic attitude and passion for education
  • Flexibility in task assignment and schedule is required
  • Reliable transportation and timeliness for shifts is required
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Excellent multitasking skills
  • Sensitivity and ability to relate to people from diverse lifestyles, socioeconomic levels, and cultures

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working directly with youth who have special needs as an inclusion assistant is preferred
  • Experience with classroom management and student behavior management preferred
  • Familiarity with outer N/NE/SE Portland communities preferred
