The Chief Biomedical Engineer at the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the Biomedical Engineering Department. This position entails managing a team of technical staff, including engineers and biomedical engineering technicians, across multiple healthcare sites within the Tennessee Valley Health System. The Chief Biomedical Engineer is expected to travel between these sites to ensure effective management and support of biomedical engineering services. The incumbent will play a crucial role in enhancing patient care by applying engineering and managerial skills to healthcare technology. This includes establishing policies and guidance for consistent methodologies, protocols, and procedures across the VISN 9 network, which encompasses Continuous Performance Improvement, HTM Analytics, and Digital Transformation initiatives. In addition to policy development, the Chief Biomedical Engineer will identify best practices and facilitate communication among stakeholders, particularly the Biomedical Engineering staff. The role also involves developing and managing an equipment management program that complies with The Joint Commission and National Fire Protection Association requirements. The Chief Biomedical Engineer will work closely with clinical programs to assess medical technology needs and priorities, ensuring that maintenance and quality assurance requirements are met. This position requires advising senior clinical and leadership staff on medical technology viability, long-term suitability, compatibility, and safety, as well as facilitating programmatic reviews of high-cost medical equipment investments. The Chief Biomedical Engineer will coordinate site preparation planning, information technology planning, and strategic equipment initiative planning with VISN program managers. The role also includes providing assistance to multidisciplinary VISN teams in deploying and utilizing complex medical technologies, analyzing organizational and operational problems, and recommending timely and economical solutions. As a subject matter expert in Biomedical Engineering, the incumbent will support specialized clinical technology, including service, system administration, training, and quality assurance across the VISN's medical centers. This position contributes significantly to the Veterans Health Administration's patient safety goals and requires a commitment to continuous improvement in healthcare technology management.
