About the position

The Supervisory Biomedical Engineer position at the Hampton VA Medical Center is a critical role responsible for the professional and administrative management of the biomedical engineering and electronics section within a facility of 1 C complexity. This position entails supervising a team of biomedical engineering technicians and electronics technicians, ensuring that the medical equipment is safe, reliable, and available for patient care activities. The supervisory biomedical engineer will develop performance standards, conduct performance evaluations, and make recommendations for appointments, awards, advancements, and disciplinary actions as necessary. Additionally, the role involves identifying continuing training needs for the team to maintain high standards of service and technical expertise. Financial management is a key responsibility, as the supervisory biomedical engineer will oversee the budget resources allocated for quality assurance and maintenance activities. This ensures that the facility's medical equipment inventory is adequately supported and operational. The engineer will serve as a staff advisor to the Chief of Engineering Service, providing expertise in biomedical engineering and assisting in the management of various programs, including medical instrument maintenance, clinical information systems, and medical device integration projects. The position also requires managing medical equipment recalls and hazard alerts, investigating incidents involving medical equipment, and ensuring compliance with standards set by The Joint Commission, FDA, and other regulatory bodies. In addition to technical responsibilities, the supervisory biomedical engineer will lead personnel functions, including recruitment, hiring, and training of new staff. They will also develop position descriptions and manage personnel assignments. The role requires collaboration with clinical staff and participation in various committees, providing accurate advice on equipment evaluations and acquisitions that can involve significant financial decisions. The engineer will also be responsible for project management related to biomedical instrumentation projects, ensuring that all aspects from planning to installation and training are effectively executed. This position is not virtual and requires a commitment to maintaining high-performance customer support for medical staff, nurses, and technologists.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise biomedical engineering and electronics technicians.
  • Develop performance standards and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Manage financial resources allocated for quality assurance and maintenance activities.
  • Serve as a staff advisor to the Chief of Engineering Service.

  • Train clinical staff on proper acquisition procedures and use of medical equipment.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Engineering from an accredited institution, or certification as a Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE).
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Experience in managing department resources, including finances, space, equipment, and staffing.
  • Ability to draft and recommend local policies related to healthcare technology management.
  • Skill in balancing multiple responsibilities and developing effective solutions to organizational problems.
  • Interpersonal skills for leading and managing employees and resolving conflicts.

Nice-to-haves
