About the position

The Supervisory Research Chemist/Chemical Engineer/Microbiologist position at the USDA's Agricultural Research Service involves leading a research program focused on dairy commodities. The role emphasizes the development and execution of innovative processes to transform dairy by-products into valuable products while ensuring the impact on consumers and the industry is considered. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders and the management of a team to achieve research objectives and enhance technology transfer.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Lead Scientist in a research program for transforming waste ice cream into food-grade allergen-free fat products.
  • Exercise leadership and line authority over personnel assigned to the unit.
  • Provide technical information and consultation both internally and externally to ARS.
  • Develop a stakeholder base to advocate for enhancing research and enable commercialization of products.
  • Direct collaborative research efforts with external dairy stakeholder groups and government agencies.
  • Serve as a science and technical advisor, identifying gaps in knowledge and leading research to fill those gaps.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or National status is required.
  • Degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering with specific coursework in chemistry, mathematics, and physics.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to GS-13 for GS-14 applicants, including leading interdisciplinary research programs and publishing findings.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to GS-14 for GS-15 applicants, including managing collaborative research programs and serving as Principal Investigator.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in managing research grants and funding.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Experience presenting research findings at national and international meetings.
