About the position

The Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in providing clinical support in the delivery room and operating room for obstetric patients. This position involves both clinical and clerical responsibilities, ensuring effective communication among medical staff, patients, and visitors while maintaining a sterile environment and adhering to established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical support in the delivery room and operating room for obstetric patients.
  • Assist with personal care and hygiene needs of assigned patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Facilitate communication with other departments, visitors, patients, medical staff, and employees.
  • Serve as a public relations liaison for the unit.
  • Apply aseptic principles to maintain a sterile environment.
  • Demonstrate competency in technical and psychomotor skills relevant to the role.
  • Provide age-specific care to obstetrical patients according to departmental policies.
  • Organize and coordinate supplies and equipment for an efficient department.
  • Answer phone calls and inform nursing staff of necessary tests or significant patient issues.
  • Collect data on assigned patients as directed by the RN and performance standards.
  • Perform accurate documentation duties in patient records as per guidelines.
  • Transcribe physician orders accurately and timely.
  • Schedule appointments, consults, and diagnostic tests for patients.
  • Initiate and maintain patient charts.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living.
  • Prepare patients for transportation and/or transport them as needed.
  • Maintain accurate logs of patient admissions, discharges, and transfers in a timely manner.
  • Ensure patient charges are entered correctly.
  • Provide scrub support during operative cases in Labor and Delivery (L&D).
  • Support staff and providers during deliveries in L&D.
  • Engage in customer service for L&D patients.
  • Collaborate with unit staff to ensure the availability of supplies and equipment.

Requirements

  • Clinical support experience in a surgical or obstetric setting.
  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques and principles.
  • Ability to perform technical and psychomotor skills relevant to surgical procedures.
  • Strong communication skills to facilitate interactions with patients and staff.
  • Experience with patient documentation and record-keeping.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist or similar qualification.
  • Experience in Labor and Delivery settings.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems.
