About the position

The role of the Gastroenterology (GI) endoscopic technician at University Health (UH) is crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of GI procedures. This position involves preparing instruments and equipment for various GI procedures and assisting in the procedure room. The GI tech is responsible for providing quality and safety to patients, guided by principles of procedural care. This includes anticipating the physician's needs during procedures and demonstrating flexibility to adapt to ever-changing conditions in the clinical environment. The GI tech assists in a wide variety of procedures and must possess the knowledge and skills to respond to changes in a patient's condition under the direction of a Registered Nurse. In addition to assisting in procedures, the GI tech provides therapeutic services necessary for patient care within their scope of practice. This role also extends to providing services in the clinic, recovery area, and assisting with Unit Clerk duties. Competence in handling, cleaning, and processing all equipment and flexible endoscopes used in procedures is essential, along with thorough documentation of cleaning and high-level disinfection processes. The position requires a commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care and safety, as well as effective communication and teamwork within the healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare instruments and equipment for GI procedures.
  • Assist in the procedure room during GI procedures.
  • Provide quality and safety to patients guided by procedural care principles.
  • Anticipate the physician's needs during procedures.
  • Adapt to changes in the patient's condition under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Provide therapeutic services necessary for patient care within the scope of practice.
  • Assist in the clinic and recovery area as needed.
  • Perform Unit Clerk duties when required.
  • Handle, clean, and process all equipment and flexible endoscopes used in procedures.
  • Document cleaning and high-level disinfection processes.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program through CAAHEP, or an accredited relevant program such as medical assistant or practical nursing program, or equivalent knowledge gained through a minimum of 6 months of relevant experience.
  • Current BCLS certification required prior to hire, and must be kept current during employment.
  • Ability to stand for the majority of work time, sometimes wearing a 10 lb. x-ray apron for several hours.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., push/pull 125 lbs, and frequently lift 25 lb. sterile trays throughout the day.
  • Good communication and written skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and adapt to changing conditions.
  • Good time management skills and ability to be self-directed.
