About the position

The Surgical Assistant plays a crucial role in facilitating and performing surgical procedures under the supervision of a surgeon. This position collaborates with the surgical team to ensure safe operations and optimal patient outcomes, contributing to the overall quality of care provided by the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the surgeon in performing surgical procedures and general patient care in the operating room.
  • Prepare patients pre-operatively, including draping, positioning, and surgical scrubs.
  • Be present in the designated operating room prior to the start of surgical cases.
  • Respond to the needs of O.R., nursing, and anesthesia staff to expedite patient care.
  • Formulate and implement treatment and therapeutic plans.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in surgical techniques, infection control, and crisis management.
  • Assist in moving patients from the operating table to the stretcher and accompany them to PACU.
  • Exhibit knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques related to specific procedures.
  • Perform endoscopic vein harvesting under the supervision of the surgeon.
  • Anticipate the surgeon's needs during procedures.
  • Maintain patient privacy and security of confidential health information.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and healthcare providers regarding procedures and care.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a Physician Assistant Training Program approved by the Board of Physician Quality Assurance.
  • Appropriate licensure and credentialing to practice under a physician's supervision in Maryland.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification by the National Commission for Certifying Physician's Assistants.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification is required.
  • Two years of experience in an operating room setting is required; four years preferred.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and work independently.
  • Demonstrated skills in decision-making, quality improvement, problem-solving, and crisis management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with diverse types of individuals including management, clinical staff, and the general public.
  • Knowledge of proper functioning of surgical equipment and instrumentation.
