About the position

Survey Manager at Thomas & Hutton is a pivotal role within our growing, well-established multi-disciplinary firm, recognized for providing exceptional consulting services throughout the southeast. Our services encompass a wide range of areas including Civil, Environmental, Structural, and Marine Engineering; Land Surveying; Land Planning; Landscape Architecture; Geographic Information Systems; and Construction Administration. In this role, the Survey Manager will be responsible for managing and coordinating surveys and investigations of land surfaces, preparing essential documents such as Topographic Maps, Boundary Adjustments, Subdivision Maps, Records of Survey, and Legal Descriptions. The Survey Manager will ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and requirements, including boundary calculations and legal ownership issues, while also ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. This position acts as an advisor to the engineering team regarding various projects, tasks, and operations, relying on a strong foundation of experience, knowledge, and judgment to plan and accomplish goals in a highly professional manner. The role requires a certain degree of creativity and latitude, as the Survey Manager will lead and direct field survey crews and survey technicians, performing a variety of complex tasks related to Boundary and Topographic Surveying and Mapping. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in land surveying, with a focus on subdivision mapping and legal descriptions, and will be proficient in the operation of Carlson Survey and GPS Equipment. This position is based in Smyrna, TN, and requires Tennessee Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) registration. The working hours are from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM on Fridays.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and coordinates surveys and investigations of land surfaces.
  • Prepares Topographic Maps, Boundary Adjustments, Subdivision Maps, Records of Survey, and Legal Descriptions.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations and requirements including boundary calculations and legal ownership issues.
  • Ensures projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Acts as advisor to the engineering team regarding projects, tasks, and operations.
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of Land Surveying.
  • Relies on experience, knowledge, and judgment to plan and accomplish goals in a highly professional manner.
  • Performs a variety of complex tasks relating to Boundary and Topographic Surveying and Mapping.
  • Leads and directs field survey crews and survey technicians.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in Land Surveying, Subdivision Mapping, Topographic Mapping and writing legal descriptions.
  • Proficiency in the operation of Carlson Survey and GPS Equipment.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Tennessee Registered Professional Land Surveyor required.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D software applications.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to multi-task, appropriately prioritize workflow and complete tasks.
  • Highly client service oriented, self-starter, and team player.
  • Ability to solve problems.
  • Excellent time management skills.
