The Bus Operator position at Raleigh County Schools involves the safe and efficient transportation of students, including those with disabilities, to and from school. The operator is responsible for performing pre and post-trip inspections to ensure the bus is in safe operating condition. This includes checking oil levels, antifreeze levels, and ensuring that all emergency exits are functional. The operator must learn the designated routes, including all pick-up and drop-off locations, and communicate effectively with students, parents, school officials, and supervisors. The role requires the operator to maintain cleanliness inside and outside the vehicle, which includes mopping and cleaning as necessary. Additionally, the operator may be required to work overtime and assist with any emergencies that may arise during transportation, including the use of a fire extinguisher if needed. The position demands the ability to sit for extended periods, tolerate ill children, and manage clean-up from any student sickness accidents. The operator must also be able to walk from the operator's seat to the rear of the bus and perform physical tasks such as installing snow chains and removing obstructions from the windshield.
