About the position

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a System Administrator for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). Reporting to the Director of IT, this position will be responsible for providing system administration and DevOps support for systems running in VMware, Windows, Linux, and cloud infrastructures. The System Administrator will manage, configure, and implement servers, storage, networking, and virtualization for the division's multiple datacenters. This includes deploying, updating, securing, and troubleshooting VMware vSphere virtualization, SAN and NAS storage, and firewall management. Tasks should be automated where possible. Centralized logging/monitoring of systems with Splunk and Solarwinds will make use of dashboards, alerts, and custom trend/incident analysis. This position collaborates with the Application Development team to deploy, manage, and maintain custom-built and third-party applications. DevOps responsibilities include building, managing, and securing deployment environments (such as virtual servers, containers, and CI/CD pipelines), automating processes, and monitoring systems performance. Additionally, the system administrator would handle software administration, troubleshooting, and security patching/remediation. Individual is responsible for independently running systems from common guidelines. Works with other technical staff and vendors to determine requirements and implement designs. May do more complex tasks under supervision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or related technology field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • A minimum of two years of experience within system administration.
  • Knowledge and experience with VMware vSphere 8 virtualization, including managing and upgrading ESXi hosts, vCenter, datastores on SAN storage, hardware (compute and storage) and networks.
  • Experience with installing and administering modern Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Active Directory, Group Policy, and Powershell scripting.
  • Good organizational, writing, presentation skills.
  • Effective interpersonal, customer service and technical skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with application development practices as regards system administration, including deployment, configurations, troubleshooting, security, and performance.
