About the position

The Tagalog In-Person Interpreter (IPI) position is a contract role based in Everett, WA, specifically serving the Snohomish County area. This role is designed for individuals who are fluent in Tagalog and English, and who possess strong verbal communication skills. The primary responsibility of the interpreter is to facilitate effective onsite communication for Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals and the practitioners who serve them. This position offers flexibility and the potential for multiple interpreting sessions throughout the day, making it an excellent opportunity for those looking to expand their interpreting business. As an interpreter, you will be expected to conduct sessions in a professional manner, maintaining a professional appearance and behavior at all times. Punctuality and preparedness for each session are crucial. You will need to demonstrate adaptability to new and changing situations, ensuring that you adhere to the ethical standards and procedural requirements specific to the interpreting context. A commitment to cultural sensitivity is essential, as you will be working with a diverse clientele. Understanding and respecting the culture, dialect, beliefs, and preferences of LEP clients is paramount. In addition to interpreting, you will be responsible for rendering concepts and meanings accurately according to established interpreter protocols. This role requires a strong aptitude for customer service and a passion for interpreting, as you will be the bridge between clients and service providers, ensuring clear and effective communication.

Responsibilities

  • Provide effective onsite interpreting sessions in a professional manner.
  • Exhibit professional appearance and behavior, including punctuality and preparedness for sessions.
  • Adapt quickly to new and changing situations.
  • Adhere to interpreter ethical standards and procedural requirements specific to interpreting context.
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural sensitivity and working in a diverse environment.
  • Respect and understand the culture, dialect, beliefs, and preferences of Limited English Proficient (LEP) clients.
  • Speak clearly in both languages using proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
  • Render exact and correct concepts and meanings according to interpreter protocol.

Requirements

  • Fluent and have strong verbal communication skills in both Tagalog and English.
  • Excellent listening and retention skills to maintain a high level of accuracy during interpretation.
  • Successful completion of a proficiency assessment or have a national certification.
  • Extensive knowledge of code of ethics and standards of practice (IMIA, NBCMI and NCIHC).
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to read and write in the requested languages.
  • Degree or certifications in interpreting practices.
  • National Medical Interpreter Certification by CCHI, NBCMI or DSHS.
  • Accredited Medical Interpreting Training course (i.e.: ALTA, MITS, Bridging the Gap, MiTio, Cross-Cultural training, 40-hour accredited medical courses).
