About the position

The Restorative Justice Coordinator at Chicago Public Schools (CPS) plays a crucial role in fostering a culture of healing and safety within the school community. This position focuses on implementing restorative practices that emphasize accountability, skill-building, and relationship development among students, staff, and families. The coordinator works closely with various stakeholders to enhance the understanding and application of restorative justice principles throughout the school, ultimately aiming to create a supportive and inclusive educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate restorative practices across universal, targeted, and intensive tiers of support with all school community stakeholders.
  • Facilitate Tier 1 proactive restorative practices with administrators, staff, students, and families.
  • Connect students, families, staff, and administrators to appropriate Tier 2 and 3 responsive restorative practices.
  • Set up and maintain physical space for the implementation of restorative practices at all tiers.
  • Provide training and coaching to build capacity within the school community in restorative justice mindset and skills.
  • Design and lead training for staff and administrators on restorative justice topics.
  • Model and co-facilitate restorative practices in classrooms and staff meetings.
  • Provide individual and team coaching for administrators and staff to develop restorative justice skills.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including parents and community members, through outreach and focus groups.
  • Develop students' restorative justice skills through workshops and leadership opportunities.
  • Participate in the Chicago and CPS restorative justice community.
  • Connect the school to local restorative justice-related community partners and resources.
  • Attend regular professional development training in restorative justice and related topics.
  • Develop data-informed strategic goals for schoolwide restorative practices implementation.

Requirements

  • Possess a valid Professional Educator License (PEL) or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS) endorsed for Social Studies and ESL.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of teaching.
  • Ability to modify instruction to meet student needs.
  • Ability to cooperate with school faculty and administration.
  • Ability to work effectively with pupils, parents, staff, and community representatives.
  • Skill in the application of contemporary teaching principles and practices.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in restorative justice practices and training.
  • Familiarity with trauma-responsive teaching methods.
  • Knowledge of cultural competency and anti-racism principles.
